I recently did the most fun experiment! I made a recipe for buttercream in four different KitchenAid® appliances and then determined which appliance worked and which didn’t. And why. And had to extensively taste test each frosting in each appliance.

Sometimes being a food blogger is kinda fun!

One most definitely did NOT work.

KitchenAid® Appliance Frosting Comparison!

And one (or three) worked amazingly well!

They all also had to endure the “pipe-ability” test.  Who do you think was victorious?

Head on over to KitchenAid®’s blog, The Kitchenthusiast, and see who the Triumphant Winner is!

  1. What a fun and informative experiment! Thank you for your sacrifice. 😉 I’m so surprised by the food processor. Who knew!?

  2. I have that very KitchenAid hand mixer and love it. I read recipes and blogs that all use a stand mixer. So I bought one. I don’t know that it does that much difference – other than you can set it to spin and walk off! I bake something about once or twice a month.

I’m glad to see your experiment. To me, it shows a good quality hand mixer can work (for the average baker) just as well. Stand mixers are very expensive. So, use that money to buy a good hand mixer and spend the rest buying the ingredients (are groceries ever going down??)!!

  3. I love my Kitchen Aid mixer! I have the “Custom” one with a 5 qt bowl. I use it of bread all the time. I have owned it since 1999 and have really put it to the test over the years. I can’t tell you how many batches of frosting I have made. It’s a lot though!
I knew a blender wouldn’t make frosting, but never thought about a food processor. I only have a smaller (holds 2-3cups) one so I doubt I will ever try it. Neat idea though.
I would love to have fun in the kitchen like that. It would be great to get a group of friends together to brain storm things to try and then do them. 😉

ps. When I got my mixer it came with a free bowl and 1 free attachment. I chose the meat grinder, thinking I would make my own Korv sausage. I still haven’t made sausage or ground any meat, but someday I hope to. lol!

  4. What a fun concept! I am off to check it out, can’t image how *hard* it must have been to taste test buttercream!! Color this girl JEALOUS! lol

  5. Never mind what machine you used.. I just want to lick all that frosting off the tops of those cupcakes. Gorgeousness! But seriously, that’s an awesome experiment and I’m so glad I have my trusty KitchenAid Stand Mixer!!

  6. When I first decided I wanted to give cake decorating a go, I used my food processor because it was all I had at the time. When reading up on icing recipes, I learnt that too much air was evil, and a stand mixer was a must. Not quite understand the whole “air” thing (I was such a newbie LOL), I rushed out, got a stand mixer, and put away the processor. I may have to dig it back out and try it again. Thanks Amanda!!

  7. Food processor frosting!!! Have you tried a larger amount yet– using perhaps 6-7 cups of icing sugar? I would love to make it this way if possible. Thanks for ALL you do. Love your book, by the way.
