A Tease No Longer

filed under: Miscellaneous on October 15, 2010

Remember way back when I told you my dear sweet hubby got me a gift that would make our (meaning you and me) relationship better?

I totally didnt mean to tease.  I sorta forgot.  I do that a lot.  I just saw a study on NBC that stated "pregnancy brain" is a myth and that when a woman gets pregnant, she actually has better cognitive skills.

Please forgive me if I boycott NBC for the rest of my life.  Or until the Olympics.

I have been wanting a new laptop forever, just ask anyone close to me.  They have been hounded with questions about it for about a year. (apparently forever equates into a year)

I got this bad boy about a week before I left for BlogHerFood.  It was a LIFE-SAVER.

Having not traveled alone before I knew I would need some connection to home and the real world… but mostly, be able to pretend I was a very important person doing very important business related things on my very important laptop and not a lonely mommy trying to pretend that she is not just playing freecell and typing on keys trying to look cool.

Also. (quick side story)

My flight home from SF was scheduled at 12:35am on Saturday night. (Sunday morning if you are technical, which I usually am not)

I left the last party around 9:00pm and headed to the airport, arriving before 10:00pm.  I then found a comfortable seat (being generous there) and opened up my laptop and watched a movie!  How cool is that?  I know the rest of the world has been doing this kind of thing for years, but it was very new to me.

Well, when 12:35am rolled around and we hadn't even begun boarding, the natives were getting restless.  We got the announcement, "There was a computer glitch and there seems to be no flight crew.  We are calling people in.  Your flight will not be leaving until 3:30am."

Are you KIDDING ME???  Has that seriously ever happened to anyone else?

Here I am, alone in an unfamiliar airport, wanting desperately to just lay in a bed and stretch out my aching back muscles and be able to close my eyes… but realizing I had another three hours to sit in that airport and wait.

(I didnt want to sleep if I was alone… I was afraid my luggage would get stolen or something)

Having the computer and being able to watch movies and catch up on emails and tweets was a sanity saver.  And I dont say that lightly!

For those of you who twitter, you might have noticed that I am actually attempting to keep up with conversations!  I had never had the capabilities before to send/read tweets without being at home, in front of the computer.  Its so liberating!

Thank you, dear hubby, for such a perfectly timed and thoughtful gift!

And thank you Delta, for forcing me to discover all of the potential this little guy holds.

At 2:00am.  In a deserted airport.  Surrounded by strangers.  Who, like me,  were all cranky and tired.

Just sayin.

  • Renee says:

Awesome gift! It has been on my wish list for a long time too…I’m really hoping Santa will deliver, but chances are very high he won’t…and I’ve been a good girl too…all for nothin’! LOL Enjoy your laptop!

  • megan says:

yay that’s wonderful! I am currently saving up every penny of blog money to put towards a laptop. Although, at this rate it could be years. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Marcia says:

    You’re so funny Amanda!

  • bridget {bake at 350} says:

Yay for a laptop!!! I got one this year and it HAS been a lifesaver! I love not having to run back and forth to the computer! And guess where mine is most of the time…and I bet yours is, too….the KITCHEN!!!

  • Strawberry CAKE says:

So glad you made it home in one piece, that can be so frustrating. When you have something to occupy your mind it does make the time go faster! So great to have met you last weekend!

  • Londa says:

Oh no! That was a horrible glitch! Way to find the silver lining in the delta cloud of flying! Love the new laptop! (my husband would prefer if your coffee was moved another 6-8 inches away ;)! )

  • Sarah Robbins says:

I saw that study on NBC and also in a parenting magazine but I totally disagree too. I was an awesome rememberer before I got pregnant and after. . . Oh boy, we are lucky we get fed, get clean and have clean clothes. And it rarely all happens on the same day, because you can be sure I forgot one important ingredient somewhere along the way!
PS LOVE the new laptop- and you ARE super important! What do those business people do all day? Make money? You make life, raise a future generation, manage a home, inspire all of us, and so many more important things every single say!

  • Alexis says:

That study must have been done by a bunch of pregnant woman with pregnancy brain. I’m pregnant right now, too, and I can barely remember what day of the week it is half of the time. I can’t find anything at all, and the other day, I was going crazy trying to remember whose phone number it was that was running through my head and why it was missing a digit. Then I realized that it was my social security number. Yikes.
And yay for the laptop. My husband got me one a few weeks ago and I LOVE it!!

I used to work for Delta, back before I had kids and (more importaintly) back before the big NW merge. If you think a three hour delay sucks for YOU, wait until your the one getting yelled at non stop for the three hours……Ok, so you were anxious to get home and get to bad, and for the gate agent it was just another crappy day at work. Yeah, I guess it does suck worse for you. I’m just glad they didn’t have you wait around for hours on end only to cancel the flight all together and re-route you for the next day. THAT would sauck.
As far as the lap top goes…..I’m still dreaming of mine,

Is it a netbook? I have a Gateway netbook that’s a 10.1″ screen. It also has no CD/DVD player, but it’s great for grabbing and going to do a little writing or net surfing. I’ve fallen in love with it over the past year that I’ve had it. I actually still have my old HP laptop that was my first laptop ever. It was like a 15″ widescreen with a DVD/CD Rom writer, and it was the most amazing thing to me. It’s great for movies, games, and stuff like that. Thankfully, I’m not much of a gamer anymore so this little netbook is great for me. Good luck with your new laptop! ๐Ÿ™‚

That is my dream.. to own one of these awesome gizmos. Secondly, I am a Frecell addict, and sometimes wonder if I should find a “Freecell anonymous” group to attend. Thirdly, NBC doesn’t know what they are talking about. It is most definitely “placenta effect”, of this I have a testimony.

  • Gianna says:

oh, yes! Our relationship is already better!
    You silly girl!
    Love you and miss ya!

  • Libby says:

    Yay for you! How exciting!

  • Sarah says:

What a thoughtful present! Our laptop is kind of a dinosaur, but we’re happy with the desktop alone.

  • Amy K says:

As midwestern dairy farmers, we don’t travel much, so I’ve never experienced this, but it sure doesn’t sound like much fun. At least you had your awesome gift to keep you company/entertained, and keep you connected with your family! Congrats on the laptop; your hubby rocks.
I’m going to disagree with NBC as well, because I KNOW I had pregnancy brain! Oh well, it’s just like anything else, a year from now they’ll have some different statistics and/or study to report about it.

  • Dessert Darling says:

OHMYGOSH- that is Awful! Agh, I can totally feel your pain.. I just had the worst experience with Helta airlines ๐Ÿ˜› Computer Glitch and new crew!? Lol. can you imagine being that flight attendant who’s called in last minute for a 3:30am take-off?!
Glad you could at least entertain yourself online ๐Ÿ™‚

  • ali says:

Yay! for husbands! Mine just got me a new laptop too, and it looks like it may even be the same one! (or it’s at least in the same line…)
So glad you made home safe and sound!

  • Karen says:

I’m sorry, dear friend. But I have to laugh about your airline fiasco. Cuz laughter tends to be my response to ridiculous, pathetic situations. *sigh*
And cuz your fiasco tops all the ones I’ve endured. *grin*
Glad you made it home. And yay for your hubby and the awesome gift!

  • Bethany says:

The only good thing about the flight “issue” – no kids to keep happy at the airport. ๐Ÿ™‚
Awesome gift. Have fun with it.
BTW, does that mean I can plan on you posting more now?

I love your cookie recipie and so thankful for you showing how to make them, this summer I made butterfly shape ones and took them to a boy scout camp my older daughter worked at and the boys loved the cookies and kept asking my daughter for more! You are such a blessing for sharing your talents, thank you. Also can’t wait to hear more about the baby! My husband and I have been praying about trying one last time for a boy we have 3 girls I am in my mid thirties and waiting for God’s peace to over ride the fears if that ever happens.

  • Lexi says:

Congrats on your new laptop! I should really get myself one…
As for your airport incident, lucky there were no children around! On Christmas Day I got delayed in the London airport for 8 hours in the lounge, then they finally put us in a hotel for the night. Sadly both my kids were traveling with me, and both of them had nothing to do. I still don’t know why our airplane was delayed for two days. So much for a merry Christmas!
