Filling
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 ½ tablespoons all purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
Crust
- 1 10-inch baked pie crust
Toppings
- Whipped cream
- Chocolate shavings
In a large saucepan, whisk together the granulated sugar, flour, and cocoa. Make sure the saucepan is off the heat.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the milk, egg yolks, and vanilla. Pour this mixture into the saucepan.
Turn the heat to medium and stir in the butter. Keep stirring until the mixture comes to a rolling boil.
Let it boil for 1 minute, continuing to stir, until the mixture thickens.
Pour the mixture into a pre-baked pie crust and smooth the top. You can gently tap the pie on the counter to help settle the filling.
Allow the pie to cool at room temperature for 2 hours, and then place it in the refrigerator to chill for an additional 2 hours.
Before serving, top the pie with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
