Ingredients

Crust

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup (42g) confectioners’ sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick or 113g) cold butter, diced

Apple Filling

  • 3 cups granny smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/3 cup (67g) brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon flour

Caramel Layer

  • 3/4 cup caramel topping
  • 1/4 cup (31g) all-purpose flour

Topping

  • 1/2 cup quick oats oatmeal
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick or 113g) cold butter, diced
  • 3/4 cup (94g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup (42g) confectioners’ sugar

Instructions

Crust

  • Preheat oven to 325°F.
  • In a large bowl, blend the flour, confectioners’ sugar, and butter. You can use a food processor or pastry cutter, but I prefer my hands. You want the butter to be no bigger than a pea size and the ingredients well incorporated.
  • Press into a greased 8x8-inch pan.
  • Bake for 15 minutes.

Apple Filling

  • In a medium bowl, combine the apples, brown sugar, and flour. Pour the apples over the baked crust.

Caramel Layer

  • In a small bowl, combine the caramel and flour. Pour over the apples.

Topping

  • In a medium bowl, add cold butter, flour, confectioners’ sugar and oatmeal. Using your hands, sift the flour over the butter and then start breaking down each piece into pea-sized pieces.
  • Crumble the oatmeal mixture over the apples and caramel mix.
  • Bake for 35 more minutes.
