So I recently put a post up on my facebook page about some lactation cookies I had made. ย I ended up getting more emails and private messages than I knew what to do with. ย So I decided to get this recipe up fast so that everyone would be able to make them!
Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Lactation Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 c flour
- 1 1/2 c oats can be quick oats
- 1 tbsp. ground flaxseed
- 2 tsp. Brewers yeast
- 1 1/2 c sugar
- 3/4 c shortening
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp. cocoa
- 1/2 tsp. all spice
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 10 oz bag Dairy Free mini chocolate chips
Instructions
- Heat oven to 350 (I baked at 325 in convection oven)
- In medium bowl sift flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, all spice and cocoa.
- In stand mixer on medium speed, add shortening, sugar and vanilla. Add in eggs one at a time. Mix on medium high for 1-2 minutes to ensure well combined.
- Turn mixer to lowest setting in slowly add in flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
- Remove bowl from mixer and add in oats, mini chocolate chips, yeast and flaxseed. Mix by hand.
- These cookies work best when on silpat or parchment paper on your baking sheet. I made each cookie roughly a tablespoon and placed about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 7-9 minutes and then cool on cooling rack. Keep a close eye on these cookies and remove when edges are just barely browned. The center may appear slightly "wet" and that is ok. Cookie will continue to bake after it is removed from oven.

What is a lactation cookie exactly? ย It a cookie that has a few key ingredients that promote lactation, or increase a nursing mom’s milk supply.
For instance, in this cookie I have included oats. ย Researchers have long since known that oatmeal has properties in it that help to lower cholesterol and maintain a healthy blood pressure. ย Oats also provide plenty of iron as well as an abundance of healthy vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. ย New moms definitely need all that!
These delicious cookies also contain Brewers yeast, ground flaxseed and dairy free mini chocolate chips. ย The yeast and flaxseed are classic components to a Lactation cookie, but I wanted to take it one step further. ย I decided to use all shortening instead of butter and the dairy free chocolate in my recipe to ensure it was dairy free.
I know when I was nursing Eddie I experimented with a dairy free diet in the hopes it would help with his colic. ย To have been able to enjoy a scrumptious chocolate chip cookie during that time would have been such a treat!
These cookies do contain cinnamon and all spice and you may certainly omit them if you have a sensitivity.
In the research I did, it wasn’t recommended to use a cinnamon supplement while breastfeeding or consume more than 1 tsp per day. (In very small doses cinnamon can actually be beneficial.)
These cookies have a crispy crunchy exterior and a chewy center. ย I loved the juxtaposition!
Here is the nitty gritty. ย New moms need all the blessings they can get. ย To be able to make cookies for a nursing mom that not only help her but taste good? ย AND it’s recommended to eat about 4 a day.
I can’t think of a better prescription!

I love that this caused such an uproar! I never knew people were so disgusted by lactation of all things! I’m sure I’m slightly immune because I’ve been nursing/lactating/breastfeeding for so long. The only “problem” I had when I saw this recipe was whether to pin them in my cookie board or my pregnancy/baby board ๐

Weight-loss bars re called by what they do, too. If you start thinking about human lard, then we could say “perverse”. I had a terrible time trying to make enough breast milk to feed my daughter. How I would have LOVED it if someone would have given me these or even shared this information with me. What a blessing it would have been. If I ever have another baby, I’m trying these immediately.
I’m with Jen, but 21 years down the road. No more babies for me. I tried to nurse but just didn’t produce enough milk. My midwife never even suggested the foods I ate could help. Our daughter turned out just fine but it still makes me feel a tad incomplete. Thanks for sharing, Amanda and don’t worry about the ugliness out there!
It makes me sad that you feel incomplete even if just a little ๐ I am sure that you are a great mom, wife and person. Maybe whip up a batch for someone who is breastfeeding ๐ I am a new mom, and didn’t know about these till after the fact. I drank mothers milk tea (yuck!). I think these cookies are a great idea as it’s a one handed snack!

I’m from Malaysia but now live in the US.in my culture, a new mother will go through 40 days of confinement where she’s to eat a certain diet, to help her recuperate and become better. I gave birth here in the US and so did a lot of research on the food I should take during my confinement. I found that they’re all to help encourage milk production and help the new mom to regain energy after giving birth. There are some food which are not allowed to be eaten during this period because they are made did the body (affects blood flow I think). Having said that, I did eat a lot of oatmeal when I was in confinement because it was easy to prepare and tummy ๐

Amanda, GREAT recipe! I’ll be sharing this with all my clients. And posting it everywhere I can! thank you for blogging about this. I did lactation cookies and man did they help…. but these ones sound so much yummier than mine lol.
Me being an Indian can tell you that we have a lot of post-pregnancy food containing ghee (clarified butter), nuts, different types of grains n legumes to aid lactation. So I am happy to see this post and learn about so many other forms of food which can do the same. And if that comes in a cookie form, who in his right mind would say no!!
Its sad to know that there are such idiots present here when we being a culture with a totally different approach towards nudity has come to (I guess we always have) accept the importance of nursing and can keep a open mind.
And, as far as the cookies being on a baking blog is concerned – Amanda, put it on both the blogs. The number of people who need this recipe is far far more than the number of idiots who will tell you that you were wrong in posting this. ๐
