I made a cake for Mothers Day.
But it was boring.
There was nothing exciting about the outside.
There is nothing excting about the inside.
Its just a plain old cake.

Except that I made it for someone who deserves something more then 'plain old'.

I came accross this quote and thought it would be the perfect addition to this cake.
A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of cake for five people, promptly announces she never did care for cake*. ~Tenneva Jordan
*Original quote says 'pie'.

And I am pretty sure that describes my mom.
Selfless.
Considerate.
Generous.
Loving.

I made a white cake with lemon frosting.
With a rose on top.
I am sure you could cover the entire top with roses! But I dont want to bore you with frosting roses.
I do however, want to share with you a few simple, easy, personalized and significant ways for you to celebrate your mom this Mothers Day.
Right after I eat this.
Beautiful. I wish I could buy one of these from you on Sunday because lemon is my mom’s favorite flavor and well… I think we all know I wouldn’t have the patience for this!
AMANDA!!! Oh my goodness…this is so sweet, and simple, and thoughtful, and original…and PERFECT! Oh, I LOVE it! LOVE!
Such an elegant, thoughtful, and simple Mother’s Day cake!
Beautiful! I love simple elegance. I have used quotes in the past for wedding cakes, graduation and birthday cakes. It always works.
Your handwriting is so nice… did you pipe the letters on the cake or are they fondant?
Simple beautiful Amanda!….just like you!!
Happy Mother’s Day!
Beautiful!
If one could be in love with a cake, I may choose this one as a mate. How perfect! The quote, the flavor combo … everything about it.
)
( Although, truth be told, I’m not so sure I’m that kind of mom to say I never cared for cake. My kids know me much too well.
Simple, elegant, and beautiful
I love it.
Beautiful, *simply* beautiful.
Absolutely perfect!
I piped on the letters MsBrownBird!
Love the quote & the simple beauty of this cake, you always make me smile!
Once again, beautiful! That is a great quote
I love this cake! My mom would be the one saying let’s split a piece lol
You always come up with the best ideas!! Gorgeous cake
Perfect sentiment for moms everywhere, Amanda. I hope that’s what my children think of me when I’m old and gray.
Such a sweet idea. Any mother would be delighted to enjoy a piece of that cake on her day, myself included.
Oh my word! This is absolutely gorgeous! So elegant and would make any sweet Mother’s Day just perfect.
Gorgeous. Now I really wish I had spent more time practicing my piping skills. Do you think it would have the same impact if it appears to have been piped by a three year old?
Oh, send me a piece!! That looks divine. Inside and out. I love how it’s elegantly simple. PERFECT!! =-D
Yet again another stunner!!
I’ve always loved that “pie” quote. I love that you changed it up for this cake ;O)
(P.S. This is probably going to be annoying, but check your wording on the sentence that comes after the third picture. I’m pretty sure you meant to say “I’m”… Have a great day!)
I know it’s awful, but the first thing I thought after I read the quote was “because she knows there will be plenty left of her kid’s piece.” Or maybe that’s just how it goes in my house. Truly though, lovely cake and lovely quote.
Mother’s Day posts mean I’ve been reading your most lovely and inspirational blog for a whole year now.
You never cease to amaze me with your talent and I hope you continue to do so for many more years to come!
Gorgeous – although makes me feel like a bad mom. I’d hide the cake and save it all for me
so simple and gorgeous! I just love your style, girl!
That quote is precious..I’m afraid, though, that my kid’s WILL not be saying that about me
Absolutely PERFECT!! I have been delegated to bring dessert this Saturday and hopefully I can duplicate this wonderful creation. Thanks for sharing.
LOL @ Stephanie – Chocolate and Toast – piping of a 3-year-old. My thoughts exactly.
My only chance would be to type this in a lovely font on the PC to print out to use as a template around the cake!
This post made me a little weepy! So pretty- I love lemon.
Precious, just like our moms. How in the world do you keep your piping on the sides perfectly level?

Beautiful cake and lemon is my favorite!
What a great Mother’s Day Cake!!! Oh that saying certainly does describe moms they give, give, give and know that deep down it’s appreciated.
I love it a perfect gift for any mother!!!
You always make such pretty cakes. And lemon is one of my weaknesses, so this one looks even MORE appealing – if that is possible.
Holy smokes! Your work is very inspiring and beautiful…
this is beautiful… describes my mom too! even though she deserves all 4 pieces
Simple, elegant and beautiful. I love this cake.
So sweet and I totally want a slice!
Stunning!!
absolutely stunning. I have seen the quote before but you interpretation with the cake is just fantastic. Your mom is so lucky.
I love this simple cake. It’s not boring at all, very elegant. And is that frosting? How on earth do you get it to be so smooth! I could use some serious help with my cakes.
Absolutely elegant cake, I LOVE IT ♥
what a perfect, simple, and stunning cake!
Love this cake! What a lovely quote, and I love the way you piped it onto the side of the cake. It makes it look so special! The quote sounds just like my mom. She is a very giving and selfless person too!
What a gorgeous mothers day cake. Now I want to rethink my plans!
The perfectly simple, elegant cake to celebrate the wonderful quality known as a mother’s love!
As I read the quote in your blog, my eyes welled with tears as I fondly recalled a Mother’s Day of long ago. 6 children, with the loving guidance of their daddy, swirling around the kitchen on Mother’s Day morning, preparing breakfast for their “beloved queen” (it was her day to be queen for a day!).
These days, mom suffers physically and emotionally from Parkinson’s Disease. She no longer has memories to help her remember the fond moments. 5 minutes after we’ve visited her, she won’t know that we’ve visited her, nor will she recognize us when we get there to see her sweet face.
However, my beautiful, wonderful mother still deserves to know that she was and is the light of my life… and she will definitely enjoy the sweetness of the cake as we lovingly feed it to her.
I’m going to scour your site to find a cake to make for my birthday. I’m sure it won’t look half as amazing as anything you do.
I’m pretty sure that quote describes you my sweet friend. Happy Mother’s day to you too!
Darling. And I could not agree more with that quote. Speaks volumes.
This looks absolutely delicious and beautiful! Great job on the lettering!! I love how simple it is!
How do you get your icing so smooth? I’ve tried many times and it just doesn’t seem to work. That cake is beautiful, as always. I hope the little one is doing good?!
Love the monochromatic color scheme – makes it so elegant. Thanks for this great idea, and Happy Mother’s Day to all!
I internally chuckled at that quote because my mom would still grab a slice of cake and just wish good luck to the one left out LOL! I love that about her, though. She’s still generous and altruistic, but she loves cake haha.
That cake looks great!
Simply lovely! What a heartfelt way to dress up a Mother’s Day cake!
Beautiful… My mom will be delighted!
I love the words on the cake. A perfect cake
You had done it again. You Make the Most Amazing Cakes
Oh Amanda, that quote is awesome! Thanks for reminding me that Mother’s Day is almost here. Been so busy with everything life I had forgotten. This cake is simple & stunning
happy almost Mother’s Day friend. xo
WOWIE! I can’t wait to make this beauty!
Beautiful quote and holds so true! And what a brilliant idea to pipe it on the cake- perfect for mother’s day!
You could bore me to death with your frosting roses because I LOVE them! What a lovely, lovely cake. So delicate and beautiful. Happy Mother’s Day to you and your mom!
This is so sweet!!
Oh Amanda, it’s gorgeous! Sometimes it’s the simplest designs that say it best. What a beautiful cake.
Beautiful. I love the quite simplicity of it. The quote is beautiful and sounds like you and your mom have a lot in common.
you are off the charts creative, talanted, and artistic. i admire you!
Oh my goodness… LOVE this cake. And the quote is just perfect. I love it
that quote perfectly describes my mom’s mom–grandma is so selfless. great cake, amanda–the elegance is in the simplicity.
I LOVE the cookie idea!!! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. But I am a little biased…and the mothers day cake {message in the letters} REALLY impresses me! HAPPY HAPPY mothers day. I hope its a wonderful one!!!
I am so sorry! I accidentally posted my comment on the wrong post. It goes on the one above *embarrassed*
Such a beautiful cake! I love the quote…it reminds me of my own mama!
Lovely. The cake and the quote.
Wow, that is truly stunning. Beautiful and simple, I love it!
I love it! That is a great quote and the cake looks simple and delicious.
What a lovely decoration for a simply delicious looking cake. It must have been difficult to pipe that sideways on the cake but you did an awesome job! No surprise I suppose
Happy Mother’s Day Amanda!
I love this quote so much. It reminds me of my mom. She was forever saying things like this, or declaring that the burnt edges of whatever she’d made were her favorites. She still does that. I hope I am that unselfish with my own children someday.
Beautiful cake, Amanda!
Love the writing….. but then, I thought the “plain” cake was ok too. A lot can be said for plain cake, especially if it is white cake with lemon icing.
