Making Oscar the Grouch cupcakes is not only fun and easy, but a great way to bring a smile to anyone’s face. Who doesn’t adore the familiar and lovable character from Sesame Street?

Oscar the Grouch Cupcakes

I got a couple of requests after the Cookie Monster video was posted. Mostly for Elmo, which I am certainly going to share soon, but a couple for Oscar the Grouch. Who is my favorite. Which probably says something about my physchologicalness, but let’s just ignore all that.

Oscar the Grouch Cupcakes!

I made Oscar the same way I made Cookie Monster with a few small changes. His eyes aren’t crooked, he has big bushy eyebrows, his mouth is a bit smaller and he has a tongue.

Here is a little video to show you how!

Tips for Success:

I made my own eyes for the cupcakes using Bakerella’s new product line. I absolutely love how easy they are to use and how you can customize each and every eye.

I used a grass tip, a #36 tip for the eyebrows and a #5 tip for the tongue. You can use anything from a #3 to #12 to get the red buttercream in there. Keep a toothpick or small offset spatula nearby in case you want to perfect it!

Since I cut out a portion of the mouth I think a chocolate cupcakes works best here, but in Oscar’s case specifically you can also try a red velvet. This is my favorite buttercream for piping. Simply tint 1/2 green, 1/4 red and 1/4 brown. (Or make some chocolate buttercream).

Oscar is pretty darn scraggly and drab and dirty looking on Sesame Street… and I didn’t quite embrace that fully. I just went with green and really haphazard piping. BUT! If you wanted to get even more detail in there, I would dull down your green with a drop of brown food coloring. You could also add in different shades of green to your piping bag, just make sure they are similar in tone.

If you are making these cupcakes for a party and need to do them a day ahead, feel free to add a bit of simple syrup to the area of cupcake that was cut out. This will help it to not dry out as much.

This particular guy was not my favorite because he almost seems to be smiling and where Oscar is concerned that simply will not do! But he is sure fun to make and by the time I had done 3 cupcakes I felt like a pro. I did a dozen in about 10 minutes, so this would be a great cupcake for any party.

Fast. Easy. Adorable. (In my humble opinion of course.) Delicious.

  1. These are just too cute. I’m going to have to make some cupcakes this weekend just to play with this.

Why couldn’t you make the hole for the mouth more straight or even slightly curved down adding in the tongue if you’re looking for that grouch look? That said, I think what you’ve created looks absolutely perfect!

    Thanks for sharing!!!
