  • milk
  • cocoa powder
  • confectioners sugar
  • vanilla

I like to use whole milk, good quality cocoa powder, organic confectioners sugar, and the best quality vanilla I can find. How to Make Chocolate Milk

There are a few easy ways to make homemade chocolate milk. The recipe below utilizes a blender, but you could also just stir the ingredients by hand. Another method would be to add all the ingredients to a jar that you have a lid for. Add ingredients, place lid on top, and then shake shake shake!

Is Chocolate Milk Good for You?

This is a loaded question, really. Chocolate milk has the same benefits of unsweetened milk, including calcium, vitamin D, and potassium (just to name a few). However, the added sugar is what makes chocolate milk more of a dessert to have once in a while than a drink to have every day. It contains up to two times the sugar of unsweetened cow’s milk.

Is Chocolate Milk Healthy for Kids?

Just like with adults, children should drink chocolate milk in moderation. One glass of chocolate milk is more than half the recommended daily sugar intake for kids. So, it’s a great treat, just like going out for ice cream, but a treat that kids and adults should enjoy once in a while.

How to Make Chocolate Milk for Your Diet

Want all organic?   Simply choose organic ingredients!  Need dairy-free?  Try almond milk.  Want gluten free?  Try raw sugar, natural dark cocoa powder (not cocoa mixes), and pure vanilla extract.  If you want sugar free try replacing the sugar with liquid Stevia. Here is a great post from Deliciously Organic that can help you determine what works best for you!

You could also use lower-fat milk when you make chocolate milk. Another healthier option would be to make your own milk with chocolate syrup so you know exactly how much chocolate you are adding. Any way you pour it, chocolate milk is definitely a refreshing treat that can be enjoyed when the craving hits!

What else can you add to Homemade Chocolate Milk?

Some folks like to add a little cinnamon (I tried this and didn’t like it) or nutmeg. Others have added about a tablespoon of butter to the blender while mixing.

Want it thicker? Try adding a teaspoon for cornstarch before blending.

Make it a Chocolate Milkshake by adding vanilla ice cream!

  1. I went to the grocery yesterday afternoon to buy 1 gallon f Chocolate milk, at the checkout I noticed that the gallon I bought cost $7.35. So this is why I am more interested in making it at home for a fraction of the cost they charged in the grocery stores.

  2. Very good. My tastebuds thank you!

My entire family including Aunts, Uncles, & cousins grew up having Chocolate Milk with Toast in the morning (sometimes lunch & dinner as well). Usually buttered toast with peanut butter or cinnamon & sugar sprinkled on the toast. So if I was at home or staying at my cousins house I had Cocoa & Toast. Sometimes homemade Hot Chocolate as well. I am 49 yrs old and still have a pre-mixed cinnamon & sugar mix in my pantry. The homemade hot chocolate we make is similar to your recipes and is very easy to make.

    Basically:
1 – 12oz Can Carnation Evaporated Milk (SAVE CAN)
Pour this in a sauce pan on the stove top at medium heat
Fill the can with hot water and add to sauce pan (SAVE CAN)
    Add 1-2 Teaspoons of Vanilla
    Ad 1 Teaspoon salt
Next put 6 Tablespoons of powdered cocoa in the can ( I use Hersheyโ€™s Cocoa)
Next put 3-4 Tablespoons of sugar in the can (Start with 3, Depends how sweet you like)
Then put some hot water in the can to mix (maybe up to 1/3 can, you can also add some mix in the sauce pan.
Then pour this into the mix and use a wire WISK to mix until hot.
    Serve & enjoy

You can use this recipe to make Chocolate pudding as well by add Cornstarch mixed thoroughly in hot water.

  3. This is such a good idea, this recipe is very very delicious!!! Iโ€™m so glad I found your site,
    God Bless You!

  4. A really simple, quick and healthier recipe than what you buy at the grocery store. He’s in a modify according to taste..
