This is quite possibly the easiest and cheapest and best option for Chocolate Milk. I am talking BEST chocolate milk I have had. Granted, I have only ever had the stuff from the grocery store. But its WAAAAYYYYY better than that. ๐ If you want to have the powder on hand to make a glass of chocolate milk whenever you crave one, be sure to check out my Chocolate Milk Powder or Chocolate Syrup recipe.
Homemade Chocolate Milk
Not only is it only four ingredients, but you can customize the ingredients to fit your diet!
- milk
- cocoa powder
- confectioners sugar
- vanilla
I like to use whole milk, good quality cocoa powder, organic confectioners sugar, and the best quality vanilla I can find. As I mentioned, these are also really fantastic alternatives to this recipe should you want to store ready-made powder โก๏ธ Chocolate Milk Powder or make your own Chocolate Syrup.
How to Make Chocolate Milk
There are a few easy ways to make homemade chocolate milk. The recipe below utilizes a blender, but you could also just stir the ingredients by hand. Another method would be to add all the ingredients to a jar that you have a lid for. Add ingredients, place lid on top, and then shake shake shake!
Is Chocolate Milk Good for You?
This is a loaded question, really. Chocolate milk has the same benefits of unsweetened milk, including calcium, vitamin D, and potassium (just to name a few). However, the added sugar is what makes chocolate milk more of a dessert to have once in a while than a drink to have every day. It contains up to two times the sugar of unsweetened cow’s milk.
Is Chocolate Milk Healthy for Kids?
Just like with adults, children should drink chocolate milk in moderation. One glass of chocolate milk is more than half the recommended daily sugar intake for kids. So, it’s a great treat, just like going out for ice cream, but a treat that kids and adults should enjoy once in a while.
How to Make Chocolate Milk for Your Diet
Want all organic? Simply choose organic ingredients! Need dairy-free? Try almond milk. Want gluten free? Try raw sugar, natural dark cocoa powder (not cocoa mixes), and pure vanilla extract. If you want sugar free try replacing the sugar with liquid Stevia. Here is a great post from Deliciously Organic that can help you determine what works best for you!
You could also use lower-fat milk when you make chocolate milk. Another healthier option would be to make your own milk with chocolate syrup so you know exactly how much chocolate you are adding. Any way you pour it, chocolate milk is definitely a refreshing treat that can be enjoyed when the craving hits!
What else can you add to Homemade Chocolate Milk?
Some folks like to add a little cinnamon (I tried this and didn’t like it) or nutmeg. Others have added about a tablespoon of butter to the blender while mixing.
Want it thicker? Try adding a teaspoon for cornstarch before blending.
Make it a Chocolate Milkshake by adding vanilla ice cream!

My homemade chocolate syrup recipe can be added to milk in your desired amount. The same goes for my chocolate milk powder. With no preservatives, you know exactly what is going in the powder and you can tweak it as you see fit.

UPDATE:
I made another version of Homemade Chocolate Milk that utilizes homemade chocolate syrup. This is a richer version, should you want an extra chocolate punch!
I love how you said it would last in the fridge, it lasted about 45 seconds before the husband and kids had drunk it up and I was mixing up more! I did use 3T of the powdered sugar but otherwise, the exact same. LOVE it!!
Made this today and liked it very much, I used to drink a half gallon a day of store bought chocolate milk and gained a lot of weight, I’m hoping now I can at least drink this a few times a week without gaining weight. I used Splenda and I’m telling you I can live without store chocolate milk now. Thank you for the awesome recipe.
It’s a MUCH better option than store bought chocolate syrup or should I say chocolate corn syrup! ๐
I agree that the cocoa flavor was a bit strong. I added at least a quarter cup of powdered sugar, so it tastes more like a milkshake… But that isn’t all that bad ๐ And anyway, my toddler likes it and we’re trying to up her milk intake, so everyone wins. Thanks!
Love it!! My mom and I are both huge chocolate lovers, with a weakness for dark chocolate almond milk. Made this recipe using unsweetened vanilla almond milk (so I omitted the vanilla) and raw sugar, and we both agree it tastes way better than the stuff from the store ๐ Yes, it is definitely a rich chocolate flavor, so use 1.5 tbsp of cocoa powder if you prefer a lighter flavor!
SO delicious!!! This cured my pregnancy craving and is so easy. I used a little immersion stick that I use to emulsify butter in my (decaf) coffee and it worked really well!
thank you that was great!!!
I love to try new recpies and came across your sit e. So please send me recpies and I’m going to try this Neopolitain Cheesecake , looks delicous.
My daughter and I get wic and she gets burned out on milk. They give you SO much so my milk was going to waste. Then I found this recipe and now she drinks milk all the time! Thank you so much for solving that problem for me. This is super easy and she can even help make it!!
I just made this as an after school snack with the kids. Ours was barely chocolate milk. With the foam from blending, it was a light and fun treat but not what i would call chocolate milk.
I use weight to measure my ingredients. We can’t have corn, so must blend our own powdered sugar. Based on the bags we used to buy, 2 TBS is 15 grams. Our cocoa powder says 2 TBS would be 10 grams. I am very curious how much your TBS of powdered sugar and cocoa powder weighed?
We will probably double the sugar and cocoa powder if the kids want to have this again.
Thanks for the insight! I have not weighed the ingredients, but if I ever do I will share!
