Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Bourbon: Use your favorite 80-100 proof bourbon for a smooth, rich base. The flavor shines through, so pick one you enjoy sipping on its own (if you enjoy bourbon).
  • Bitters: Classic aromatic bitters add depth and balance the sweetness of the maple syrup. Two dashes are perfect, but you can adjust to taste.
  • Maple Syrup: Pure maple syrup gives this cocktail a natural sweetness and warm, woodsy flavor. Avoid imitation syrups; they won’t provide the same richness.
  • Orange Peel: Twisting the peel over the glass releases essential oils that brighten and lift the flavors.
  • Cinnamon Stick (Optional): Adds a subtle spice aroma, and I like how it makes the drink extra festive for fall or holiday gatherings.

FAQs

Can I make this drink in a larger batch?

Yes! Multiply the ingredients and mix in a pitcher. Store chilled and stir before serving over ice.

Can I use a different type of whiskey?

Bourbon is classic here, but rye works nicely for a spicier profile.

Can I substitute the maple syrup?

You could try honey or agave syrup, but the flavor will be slightly different. Maple syrup gives the best fall-forward warmth.

How should I garnish if I don’t have an orange peel?

A twist of lemon peel or a cinnamon stick alone can work in a pinch, though the orange oil really elevates the drink.

Serving Ideas

  • Pair with dessert: A slice of spiced pound cake, apple crisp, or pecan tart complements the maple notes beautifully.
  • Fall gatherings: Serve alongside a charcuterie board for a sophisticated crowd-pleaser.
  • After-dinner treat: Sip slowly while relaxing with a good book or fireplace for a comforting nightcap.
  • Holiday twist: Add a few whole cloves to the orange peel or rim the glass with a touch of cinnamon sugar for extra flair.

How to Store a Maple Old Fashioned

This cocktail is best enjoyed freshly mixed, but you can prepare a larger batch ahead of time. Store the mixed drink (without ice) in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Stir well before pouring over fresh ice.
