Blackberry Crisp is a layer of fresh blackberries topped and baked with a sweet, crunchy oat crisp for the perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors. It’s an easy dessert to prepare, and even easier to indulge and enjoy, both warm and cold! Serve a piece with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I also have a Blueberry Crisp with a double layer of crisp that you will also want to try!
Ingredients & Substitutions
Blackberries: Fresh blackberries are best in this dessert, and they are usually in season from late Spring to early Fall. But, you could use frozen berries (unthawed) if you have those on hand. If using frozen, keep in mind that they may release more moisture, affecting the texture of the crisp.
Oats: Look for old-fashioned oats, also known as rolled oats, for the crisp. They have a heartier texture, which contributes to the taste and texture of the crisp. If substituting quick (instant) oats, it may change the texture of the crisp.
Flour: All-purpose flour is used to coat the berries and in the crisp topping.
Sugar: Light brown sugar is used to sweeten the oat crisp. We had tested adding sugar to the berries, too, but the dessert was already plenty sweet.
Butter: I prefer using unsalted butter in most of my baking recipes. This helps you (the baker) control the amount of salt in a recipe.
Can I Use Different Kinds Of Berries?
Yes! While this recipe calls for blackberries, you could certainly use a different kind of berry. Try the dessert with blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, or mixed berries.
How To Store Blackberry Crisp
To store blackberry crisp, first, let it cool to room temperature. Next, store it, covered, in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. If you want to warm it up before serving, heat it in the oven for about 10 minutes. But, it is also delicious cold!
Can I Freeze Blackberry Crisp?
Yes, you can freeze blackberry crisp. To freeze the blackberry crisp, first, let it cool to room temperature. Next, store it in a freezer-safe container for up to 2-3 months. When ready to enjoy, let the crisp thaw in the refrigerator overnight.
