Ingredients & Substitutions

Blackberries: With blackberries in peak season during the summer, this is definitely a drink you will want to make on those hot summer days. Using fresh berries really elevates the flavor of the drink.

Lemon Juice: Squeeze juice from a large lemon for about 3 tablespoons of juice. In a pinch, you could use bottled lemon juice, but it will not have as fresh or zesty a flavor as freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Vodka: The vodka serves as the alcoholic base of the drink. It allows the other tastes to shine while providing a subtle kick. Use your favorite brand of vodka. Or, try the drink with gin or tequila.

Simple Syrup: Simple syrup is a sweetener that can easily be made at home with just sugar and water. It is often used in cocktails, coffee, and tea as well as added to baked goods.

Club Soda: Club soda is carbonated water that has added minerals. Seltzer or sparkling water would also be suitable options to use. If you do want to add a little more sweetness to the cocktail, try adding lemon-lime soda or ginger ale.

Raw Ingredients Going into a Shaker to Make a Blackberry Fizz.

No Cocktail Shaker? No Problem!

If you don’t have a cocktail shaker, you can still easily make this drink. I like to use a traveling coffee mug with a tight lid. Muddle the blackberries with lemon juice. Then, add the vodka, simple syrup, and ice. Cover the opening mouth part, and get shakinโ€™! Open it up and pour it into the glass of ice. Top with club soda.

Can I Make This Drink Without Alcohol?

Yes! To make this drink suitable for all ages, a Blackberry Fizz Mocktail, simply leave out the vodka. Instead, add more club soda, lemon-lime soda, or ginger ale.

Can I Make Blackberry Fizz Ahead Of Time?

Sure! You can certainly make this cocktail ahead of time, and even make a large batch if needed. Simply multiply the ingredients by how many servings you need. Then, combine the ingredients, except the club soda, in a container or pitcher. Store it in the refrigerator for a couple of days. When ready to serve, pour over a glass filled with ice and top it with club soda (or the carbonated beverage preferred).

What the Test Kitchen had to say about this recipe:

Autumn

I don't like my drinks overly sweet so this one was perfect for me! Light and refreshing with a little bit of blackberry flavor, and a slight sweetness from the simple syrup. For those that prefer a sweeter drink, you can just increase the blackberry mixture to your liking!

Elizabeth

This is my kind of cocktail, not overly sweet with a little bit of fizz from the soda water. If you prefer a subtly flavored alcoholic beverage, this is it! It looks beautiful with the garnishes, too!

Selena

This drink is super yummy and refreshing! Perfect for when berries are in season. I love that you can control how strong you want it as well with the amount of club soda!

Bella

I like how this is not overwhelmingly sweet. The blackberries are a great addition to this drink because it is fresh and slightly tart. There is also a nice carbonation from the club soda!
