Chocolate Mug Cake

Have you ever had a craving for chocolate cake but didn’t feel like making a whole cake? Have I got a solution for you! This easy recipe is cheap, FAST, and super delicious!

All you need is three things:

  • Angel Food Cake Mix
  • Chocolate Cake Mix
  • water

I like to make a big batch and store it so I have something yummy for when the craving strikes!

How to Make a Mug Cake

The concept is easy.

One box of angel food cake mix. One box any flavor cake mix. (I prefer chocolate) Combine. Use some immediately then store the rest in your pantry.

When ready to eat:

3 tablespoons cake mix

2 tablespoons water

1 minute in the microwave

And yes it is that easy!

But lets get real about a couple of things.

Does it Taste Good?

Yes. Kinda. ๐Ÿคฃ This cake does not compare to a homemadeย Perfect Chocolate Cake. Or a Homemade Yellow Cake. Or any from-scratch cake that you make.

What it does, quite beautifully actually, is serve a craving. It’s chocolate. It’s hot. It’s quick.

It’s a small portion so you don’t have to add ‘major guilt trip’ to your list of daily tasks.

Tips for the Perfect Mug Cake

The cake mixture recipe is meant to be fun and easy! Play with it. Have fun. Add whatever you have in the pantry! (I love the idea of a white cake with McCormickยฎ Orange Extract in the summer!)

If you want to double the recipe (if you have a large mug as I did) you can. Simply add an additional 10 seconds in the microwave.

If you are adding a garnish like whipped cream, it will melt if the chocolate cake is hot. (which tastes amazing but doesn’t look as pretty)

  1. Is there an alternative to the Angel Food Cake Mix? So hard to find in Australia without ordering online or going to speciality stores.

    1. This mug cake works well with angel food cake mix because it has powdered egg whites in it. If you can find powdered egg whites, experiment with the batter.

  2. I found this combination to be soooooo much better.

    2 boxes cake mix
    1 box angel food

    6 tablespoon mix
    2 tablespoon water
    1 tablespoon oil.

    One minutes in the microwave.

Try it if you find this one too spongy.

  3. I have used this for some time…got jars at the dollar store along with some cute mugs to give as gifts. I do put vanilla in mine, but don’t exactly measure it out…and to enhance the chocolate flavor a little instant coffee granules. Have added chocolate chips, peanut butter chips…and even raspberry jam. Fun, easy recipe for a quick treat!

    1. Are you serious? I suggest that you look on the cake mix boxes for that info. Remember , it’s a dessert and not a meal.

  4. I made my own version of this just now and it turned out perfect. I had no chocolate cake mix or angel food cake… So I took what I had which was a yellow cake mix & chocolate chip cookie mix and put those in a bowl, added like 4-5 TBSP of dark chocolate unsweetened cocoa, a couple TBSP of white granulated sugar, and 3 TS of baking powder. Blended it well. And then I added 6 TBSP of the mix, 1 TBSP of oil and 2 TBSP of water. Microwave for 1 minute
Topped with butter pecan ice cream. Mmmm sooo good!!!! Thank you for the idea. I also made again and added a little vanilla which was also delicious as well ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. When you mix these cake mixes do you also have to add the other ingredients like the baking soda, sugar , etc. As the box calls for?
