Simple Syrup is a homemade recipe for the popular sweetener that can be used in cocktails, coffee, tea, and added to baked goods and desserts. I also have a Chocolate Simple Syrup that works best on chocolate cake and red velvet cake!
Simple Syrup Recipe
This Simple Syrup Recipe is a baker’s secret weapon that can be used on cakes, cupcakes, cookies (on rare occasions), and even in my cocktails! The recipe for simple syrup is easy and can be modified in many ways. And, all you need is water and sugar to make this sweetener.
How to Store Simple Syrup
I like to store my simple syrup in a plastic bottle that has easy pouring and can close. However, you can also store it in an airtight container, in the refrigerator, for up to 3 weeks.
Can I Double or Triple the Simple Syrup Recipe?
Yes! The equation stays the same no matter how much simple syrup you make. I made a large batch and used 3 cups of sugar and 3 cups of water. It is a basic 1:1 ratio.
Why Should I Add Simple Syrup to Cakes?
Simply put, it keeps the cake moist throughout every stage of assembly and decoration. Not only does it help keep your cake moist, but it also helps to add sweet flavor which is always good!
Will it Make My Cake Too Sweet?
No. It will enhance the sweetness in your cake but not alter the flavor.
Will Simple Syrup Make My Cake Soggy?
No, but remember, less is more in this case. It’s easy to add additional syrup if needed.
Can I Use Simple Syrup with Fillings and Frostings?
Yes, definitely. You should use simple syrup on your cake layers and then fill/decorate as you normally would.
Can I Make this Simple Syrup Recipe in Different Flavors?
Absolutely! Simple syrups can be quite diverse. Mix in spices, extracts, and fruit for an instant flavored sweetener! In fact, I do have a Banana Simple Syrup to get you started on trying flavored simple syrups.

Could you add vanilla or almond extract for different flavor?
I made this syrup. I in fact did add some vanilla flavoring to my syrup. My cake was a German Chocolate cake. It added much moisture and the flavor just popped in your mouth. I have the extra in my refrigerator. But wondering if you froze this, what is the shelf life??
I made orange cranberry muffins and they came out dry. I found your recipe for simple syrup. I added orange extract. It turned my ok muffins to moist wow muffins. Thank you.
You are great. Sharing so many delicious recipes. I love to cook and bake but my health and age donโt allow me to do as much as before. I used to make Eclairs and cream puffs, but itโs been so long that I forgot the recipes. If you can share them I would make them even if for the last time. Also if you have a recipe for a soft pizza dough? I want to make one similar to NY pizzas cause where I live they are no good ones. A place called five stars pizza is not worth even 1 star. And is very expensive for what they make. I could have order one from Buffalo NY an Italian Restaurant for almost the same price and have a good one. Well donโt want to bore you anymore so this is it for now.
I was a licensed bartender years ago and this was a major part of my cocktail repertoire.
I continue to use this to moisten cakes as well as to sweeten summer drinks. But the possibilities are endless here. Iโve made cranberry simple syrup to make the best cosmopolitans and raspberry for the best Prosecco cocktails. Orange simple syrup gives plain cakes just the right amount of zing and mint leaves steeped in simple syrup makes amazing mojitos and even mojito cupcakes. Herbal simple syrups like basil (for strawberry lemonades smashed) or rosemary are unique as well.
Can you make this keto friendly?
If you use a sugar substitute it would be keto friendly. I usually keep some in my pantry for anything I want to be sugar free. Xylitol is one option. It pretty much has the same consistency as sugar.
Make in the microwave??
