Ingredients & Substitutions

Butter: I prefer using unsalted butter to have the most control over salt added to recipes. If using salted butter, you may want to lessen the salt added to the Rice Krispie treats.

Caramel Sauce: Some of the caramel sauce is added to the Rice Krispie mixture. Then, once the bars are set, more caramel is drizzled over the top. If you don’t have store-bought caramel, make homemade caramel sauce to use!

Salt: Kosher salt is added to the cereal mixture; then, more is sprinkled over the caramel for more of a salted caramel taste. Sea salt could also be sprinkled over the top.

Marshmallows: Look for a 10-ounce bag of mini marshmallows for the recipe, which is about 6 cups. Or, use about 40 regular-sized marshmallows, cut into smaller pieces.

Cereal:ย Look for Rice Krispies or any variety of crispy rice cereal or toasted rice cereal.

What the Test Kitchen had to say about this recipe:

Autumn

Upgraded rice krispie bars! I'm a total sucker for salted caramel anything, so this was a big win in my book.

Elizabeth

I had high hopes for this treat, but I can't say I loved the flavor combination. The texture of the bars was perfect, nice and soft, but I didn't think the salted caramel worked with the marshmallow-y bars.

Rachael

The caramel marshmallow mixture is just wonderful on the Rice Krispies cereal. It is such an elevated Rice Krispie bar version and it's delicious!

Bella

I am in love. This is so good. Each bite is gooey but crispy at the same time. I really like the caramel drizzle on the top!

Annabelle

I really like these! They have lots of caramel flavor and just a hint of salt, and who doesn't love a simple dessert?

Selena

These are so good! I loved the addition of the caramel in them. I'd make these at home.
