Ingredients & Substitutions
- Granulated Sugar: Sweetens the pudding mix and gives it the classic vanilla pudding flavor.
- Non-Fat Dry Milk Powder: Adds creamy milk flavor and helps create a smooth pudding texture when the mix is prepared. It also makes this a convenient pantry staple that can be stored until you are ready to use it.
- Cornstarch: Thickens the pudding as it cooks and gives it a smooth, creamy consistency.
- Kosher Salt: Balances the sweetness and enhances the vanilla flavor.
- To make the pudding: You’ll also need whole milk, unsalted butter, and vanilla extract to cook the mix into a rich, smooth vanilla pudding.

FAQs
Can I use this dry mix in recipes that call for boxed instant pudding mix?
Not directly as a 1:1 substitute. This homemade vanilla pudding mix is designed to be cooked on the stovetop, while boxed instant pudding mix is formulated to thicken without heat. However, you can use the prepared vanilla pudding (once cooked and chilled) in recipes like parfaits, trifles, layered desserts, or as a pie filling.
How do I use homemade vanilla pudding mix?
To make vanilla pudding, cook the dry mix with milk, then stir in butter and vanilla extract. Once chilled, it can be enjoyed on its own or used in desserts that call for prepared vanilla pudding.
How long does homemade vanilla pudding mix last?
Store the dry mix in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 3 to 4 months. Keep moisture out of the container to help the mix stay fresh.
Can I use a different type of milk?
Whole milk gives the richest, creamiest texture, but 2% milk can also be used. I do not recommend using water because the pudding will not have the same creamy flavor and texture.
Can I make this pudding mix ahead of time?
Yes! That is what makes this homemade vanilla pudding mix so convenient. Mix up a batch and keep it in your pantry until you are ready to make pudding or use it as part of another dessert.

How to Store Homemade Vanilla Pudding Mix
Store the dry vanilla pudding mix in an airtight container or mason jar with a tight-fitting lid. Keep it in a cool, dry place, like a pantry or cupboard, for up to 3 to 4 months.
For the best results, keep the mix away from moisture. If it becomes damp, the cornstarch can clump, and the mixture may not cook as smoothly.
