Usually when I see a stand that I adore I try to imagine a cake that would compliment it. ย And usually I want the cake to be the focal point… not the stand.
Not this cake. ย How could I possible compete with that majestic stand?
So I piped out flowers in the richest chocolate buttercream I could fathom (posting a recipe soon!) and hoped they would hold a candle up to the intricate and flawlessly designed flowers on the cake stand.
The dark chocolate flowers are attempting to mimicย the white orchid design on the cake platter- which is a signature collection of Michael Aram.
Well.
I cannot hold a candle to the stand, and thats ok! ย I dont mind taking a back seat to something so truly pretty.
The beauty of bring a cake baker is that I get to eat the evidence. ย The cake is a rich black velvet cake to contrast the bright white vanilla buttercream frosting. ย I loved the flavor as much as the bold design choice!
This black velvet cake is a simple adaptation of Martha Stewartsย Red Velvet Cake. Soooooooo good!
Just look at those matching side plates! ย Its a food photographers dream.

Also, I follow Michael’s Pinterest boards! How fun!
Okay, so I had to pull myself out his Pinterest boards so I could come back here and enter my comment. Oy! I would definitely buy umm… oh gosh, what a tough choice. Honestly, I would need some time to hone my decision. But I think it would servingware of some sort. I love his metal work. I’d like to feel the weight of the coasters and check out the pastry domes. What gorgeous artistry – thank you for this find! (Oh, and I’m now following on both Pinterest and FB!)
I followed his boards on Pinterest and liked him from my personal FB and Business one. ๐ Thanks for the give-away Amanda. ๐ I like the metal pitchers because whenever I make sun tea I don’t like to keep them in my large mason jars because it’s difficult for my children to pour a glass without spilling the whole jar. If I use a pitcher that would eliminate spills and it looks pretty too. ๐
P.S. Gorgeous dark cake and it does look so elegant on that stand.
I would like to buy the ocean ice bucket and other matching items.c

Oh, and the cake looks amazing. Can’t wait to try it!
I would definitely buy the Brain Coral Bowl!! It is so beautiful and would be the talk of all my dinner parties!
Ooo! I love their black orchid set. I’d get the black orchid bowl.
That is a stunning cake on a stunning cake stand, Amanda! And I took a peak at the Michael Aram collections, I love that they allow you to mix and match the dinnerware. How fun is that!
