What Kind of Coffee Should I Use in Buttercream?

I like a really strong cup of black coffee in this recipe. However, you can use whatever strength you prefer as well as use a decaf.

You can also use espresso powder, I recommend between 1-2 teaspoons in this recipe.

How to Decorate This Cake

I used a Russian Tip that was a small rosette design. I filled up my piping bags (don’t forget to double bag!) and simply piped all over the top and sides of this cake. You really can’t mess it up!

  1. Can I have a bowl full, please? This looks SO good! I love any way I can get my coffee (and chocolate!) fix!

  2. Hi Amanda. You may have already said this, but will this frosting hold up to piping rosettes, like with 1M and the vertical squiggle with #21? Thank you…sounds great.

  3. With my birthday coming up this is the frosting I am going to use for my cake! I love the flavor of coffee in cakes. I can imagine that it will be heavenly in frosting!!

  4. As an old time baker, I like the cream cheese frosting’s better as it is not as sweet. After many years of cake decorating, I have to scrape off the butter cream icings on other cakes. This one, with the coffee, I will definitely try.
Have a question, what tip did you use in your decorating.? I love your site.

  5. Well, it is truly lovely to see such beautiful cake. As I love to find and explore different types of themes for wedding invitations according to its theme, sweets and decoration, this gives me a new design idea of yet another wedding invitation card.

  6. I love the coffee in the frosting! I could easily gobble this up by the spoonful! And this cake is just stunning!

    1. It really depends on what method you are using to brew. But a “cup of coffee” will work just fine… have no fear. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. This looks amazing. Do you have to refrigerate the frosting because of the cream cheese? Or does it hold its shape at room temp?
