Chocolate Mug Cake

Have you ever had a craving for chocolate cake but didn’t feel like making a whole cake? Have I got a solution for you! This easy recipe is cheap, FAST, and super delicious!

All you need is three things:

  • Angel Food Cake Mix
  • Chocolate Cake Mix
  • water

I like to make a big batch and store it so I have something yummy for when the craving strikes!

How to Make a Mug Cake

The concept is easy.

One box of angel food cake mix. One box any flavor cake mix. (I prefer chocolate) Combine. Use some immediately then store the rest in your pantry.

When ready to eat:

3 tablespoons cake mix

2 tablespoons water

1 minute in the microwave

And yes it is that easy!

But lets get real about a couple of things.

Does it Taste Good?

Yes. Kinda. ๐Ÿคฃ This cake does not compare to a homemadeย Perfect Chocolate Cake. Or a Homemade Yellow Cake. Or any from-scratch cake that you make.

What it does, quite beautifully actually, is serve a craving. It’s chocolate. It’s hot. It’s quick.

It’s a small portion so you don’t have to add ‘major guilt trip’ to your list of daily tasks.

I experimented with a LOT of flavors and settled on chocolate cake with mini chocolate chips and massive fun toppings with sprinkles.

These are Mini Rainbow Chocolate Chips which are right up there with sliced bread in terms of inventions that make my life awesome.

Tips for the Perfect Mug Cake

The cake mixture recipe is meant to be fun and easy! Play with it. Have fun. Add whatever you have in the pantry! (I love the idea of a white cake with McCormickยฎ Orange Extract in the summer!)

If you want to double the recipe (if you have a large mug as I did) you can. Simply add an additional 10 seconds in the microwave.

If you are adding a garnish like whipped cream, it will melt if the chocolate cake is hot. (which tastes amazing but doesn’t look as pretty)

  1. I’m putting this mix into a mason jar to give to my mother today. She can’t bake anymore where she lives (no oven), but I know she’ll love this quick easy mix to get her cake fix without buying one from the store. Thank you!

  2. i just made a batch and part I’m sending back with my daughter for college and part I might take to work. I made a mug and used the mini chips and vanilla. Wasn’t crazy about the chips, but the cake portion was fine. Anyone make this and not use the vanilla? How does it taste?

    1. Seems like a lot of vanilla for one little cup. Was going to try another mug without the vanilla to see how it tastes, but do I need two of these before dinner? Ugh. Anyone make it just as written (3-2-1)? This recipe will be helpful since my husband was diagnosed with diabetes this spring. I hate to make sweets at home and eat in front of him. This will satisfy my need for chocolate cake. Ok only part of my need for chocolate cake. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Hi,

Can you please tell me where you got the mason jar in this blog? I can’t find it! Your recipe was a life saver for a last minute thank you gift for my Hubby and it was dee-lish! I want to make gifts for friends!

    Thanks so much!

    1. I found mine at Dollar General and Target. Both places were around $3 for the jar….not too bad in my opinion, even better when filled with cake mix!!!

  4. Is the vanilla a requirement? If so, is there some way to add that flavor to the mix, so that it is not required? I am thinking for gifts of the mix to college students that may not have that stuff available!

    TIA,

    1. How about including a little bottle of vanilla with the jar of mix. A nice gift for college students who would do a little cooking, is a small covered tub with mini essentials for the kitchen., small toaster oven or microwave sized dishes and bake ware and one of those combination measuring cups, an adjustable measuring spoon that slides to change measure, a zoodle slicer, Mini grater, etc..

  5. Just a bit of clarification. Recipe states to add vanilla. But the jar states , just add water. Could you help with clarifying it for me? I would love to give to teachers before Christmas break!!!

  6. Sounds like a great recipe! I can’t wait to try it I may even mix up a batch to give as add-on Xmas presents. Cake in a jar and all that.
