Chocolate Mug Cake~ ready in ONE minute!

Chocolate Mug Cake

Have you ever had a craving for chocolate cake but didn’t feel like making a whole cake? Have I got a solution for you! This easy recipe is cheap, FAST, and super delicious!

All you need is three things:

  • Angel Food Cake Mix
  • Chocolate Cake Mix
  • water

I like to make a big batch and store it so I have something yummy for when the craving strikes!

How to Make a Mug Cake

The concept is easy.

One box angel food cake mix. One box any flavor cake mix. (I prefer chocolate) Combine. Use some immediately then store the rest in your pantry.

When ready to eat:

3 tablespoons cake mix

2 tablespoons water

1 minute in the microwave

And yes it is that easy!

But lets get real about a couple of things.

This cake does not compare to a homemade Perfect Chocolate Cake. Or a Homemade Yellow Cake. Or any from-scratch cake that you make.

What is does, quite beautifully actually, is serve a craving. It’s chocolate. It’s hot. It’s quick.

It’s a small portion so you don’t have to add ‘major guilt trip’ to your list of daily tasks.

I experimented with a LOT of flavors and settled on chocolate cake with mini chocolate chips and massive fun toppings with sprinkles.

Because, sprinkles.

These are Mini Rainbow Chocolate Chips which is right up there with sliced bread in terms of inventions that make my life awesome.

I just want to look at this picture and forget that there is a child climbing on top of my printer and pressing buttons with wild abandon.

Tips for the Perfect Mug Cake

The cake mixture recipe is meant to be fun and easy! Play with it. Have fun. Add whatever you have in the pantry! (I love the idea of a white cake with McCormick® Orange Extract in the summer!)

If you want to double the recipe (if you have a large mug as I did) you can. Simply add an additional 10 seconds in the microwave.

If you are adding a garnish like whipped cream, it will melt if the chocolate cake is hot. (which tastes amazing but doesn’t look as pretty)

What size mug do you use?

  • madelyn diaz says:

what is the nutritional information on this

  • Anne says:

I realize that McCormick is sponsoring you. But I think a whole teaspoon of vanilla is ridiculous. We’ve been making this at school as a quick recipe for teaching lab skills/microwave procedures/calorie analysis, etc… without flavoring or fany toppings. When a whole recipe only requires 1 tsp. This seems excessive to me!

    • Amanda says:

The amount of vanilla has nothing to do with sponsors… I find it to be the perfect amount. If you want to use a different amount, please feel free! 🙂

      • Teena says:

You can never have too much vanilla!😁😁😁

    • Mary says:

What a waste of your time. Change the channel.

  • Eileen says:

Where did you get the mugs that are pictured

  • Joy says:

Where did you get the cute glass containers to put them in (for gifts)?

    • Eileen says:

      I’m thinking the dollar store

  • Bek says:

Is there an alternative to the Angel Food Cake Mix? So hard to find in Australia without ordering online or going to speciality stores.

    • Arlene says:

This mug cake works well with angel food cake mix because it has powdered egg whites in it. If you can find powdered egg whites, experiment with the batter.

  • Cynthia Daugherty says:

this is a fun and yummy idea but are you sure about the “1 teaspoon of vanilla” for such a small cake?

  • kindra says:

I found this combination to be soooooo much better.

    2 boxes cake mix
    1 box angel food

    6 tablespoon mix
    2 tablespoon water
    1 tablespoon oil.

    One minutes in the microwave.

Try it if you find this one too spongy.

    • mary says:

I wondered why no oil or even a bit of egg. Thanks!

  • SHAWNA says:

I have used this for some time…got jars at the dollar store along with some cute mugs to give as gifts. I do put vanilla in mine, but don’t exactly measure it out…and to enhance the chocolate flavor a little instant coffee granules. Have added chocolate chips, peanut butter chips…and even raspberry jam. Fun, easy recipe for a quick treat!

  • Linda says:

    What us the nutritional info?

    • Brenda Mann says:

Are you serious? I suggest that you look on the cake mix boxes for that info. Remember , it’s a dessert and not a meal.

  • Eunice Evans says:

    Thank you for sharing information!

  • Sami says:

I made my own version of this just now and it turned out perfect. I had no chocolate cake mix or angel food cake… So I took what I had which was a yellow cake mix & chocolate chip cookie mix and put those in a bowl, added like 4-5 TBSP of dark chocolate unsweetened cocoa, a couple TBSP of white granulated sugar, and 3 TS of baking powder. Blended it well. And then I added 6 TBSP of the mix, 1 TBSP of oil and 2 TBSP of water. Microwave for 1 minute
Topped with butter pecan ice cream. Mmmm sooo good!!!! Thank you for the idea. I also made again and added a little vanilla which was also delicious as well 🙂

    • Sami says:

Edit* I used 1 TBSP of coconut oil. I’m sure any oil would work though. 🙂

  • Heather says:

Oh wow, this is very interesting. Has any one figured out the nutrition on one serving?

  • Lisa says:

When you mix these cake mixes do you also have to add the other ingredients like the baking soda, sugar , etc. As the box calls for?

    • Amanda says:

Nope, just the ingredients listed in my recipe.

  • Renee says:

What kind of cake mix calls for baking powder or sugar? I am going to try using meringue powder instead of angel food cake mix.

  • Jeanne M. Doering says:

Perfect! Trying out simple recipes for camping this year. This recipe will wow when we need that quick treat!

  • Sherry says:

Is it safe to eat this cake made in a minute in the microwave, without really baking for 37-40 minutes in an oven at 350 degrees? Wouldn’t it be raw like this?

    • lightjammer says:

No. The powdered egg in the mix has already been processed and is safe to eat.

  • Tammy says:

This cake is suppose to be low calorie and fat, why would you add all those extra calories and fat to it, by using oils eggs, etc. you can make a regular cake with those ing. This is suppose to be guilt free.

  • Sue Champney says:

Does anyone know what the weight watchers smart points are for one serving?

  • Richere Hache says:
