Putting together a fruit platter looks impressive to friends and family, but is truly one of the easiest ways to enjoy fruit! A couple of other options are my Fruit Pizza and Blueberry Galette!

Fresh Fruit Platter! Such an easy snack!

One of my biggest struggles of late has been grocery shopping. It may sound harmless and mundane to most; the simplistic task of making a list, finding a store that sells those items, and then going to purchase them.

List, store, buy, go home. Easy peasy.

Only… not so much.

Fresh Fruit Platter and How I Shop (kinda)

This is usually how grocery store shopping goes in my house:

Monday-Decide that I must go grocery shopping, start thinking about what I need to get. Day gets busy and by the time hubby gets home and we finish dinner I am exhausted. No grocery store today.

Tuesday-Running low on supplies… need to ransack the freezer for dinner. Plan on going to the store in the afternoon, smallest child ends up taking nap at a weird time and can’t make it. Too exhausted by the time dinner is over. Must go tomorrow.

Wednesday– Kids have activities at night, must go to store this afternoon! Schooling takes longer than expected, one child seems to have a runny nose and sniffles. Yuck, germs. Skip store. Have hubby pick up dinner on his way home.

Thursday-Completely out of milk and bread. Consider watering down some heavy cream for cereal. Make bread from scratch and pretend it was my plan all along. Dinner is left overs, and I declare it “clean out the fridge day”, only don’t actually clean the fridge. Hubby is out of town, so at 8:00om at night I put all kids into the car in their jammies and run to the convenience store for tiny sized totally overpriced milk so we can have breakfast in the morning.

Friday-I will make it to the store today! Absolutely must do anything in my power to avoid grocery shopping on a Saturday. Kids are starting to get tired and run-down (not to mention cranky!) … must get them some fresh and healthy food! Desperate for good food we venture out to the nearest Super Store. The selection is sub-par. Fruits and veggies are wilted and picked over. The meat selection is near expiration. My feet start hurting and I get distracted in the cookie aisle. We go home with 1-gallon milk, four packages of Oreo’s, and some diapers.

Saturday– Family is planning a revolt. They want good food! I finally make up a list and head to the store. The parking lot is full and I walk 100 yards in the rain. The store is a mad house. Everything is picked over and I trip on the stock boy trying to replenish the bananas. They are out of coupon books so I have to pay full price for everything. Checkout lines are three deep and the baby is kicking me in the bladder.

Sunday– We are out of milk as I forgot to buy more yesterday.

If you want more amazing Appetizers, I have a fantastic list!

  1. I check all the weekly circulars and compare prices. Also, I always stock up when something is on sale!

  2. I solved the whole problem when my dear sweet man told me I needed to get my act together before going to the grocery store. Like a fool he then added he could do it better. I no longer have to shop now. He does all the shopping unless it’s a special item I know he will never find in the store. The system works great, it’s a little more expensive though.

  3. I shop more frequently. It can be more of a pain, but everything is fresher and we’re less likely to waste.

  4. Until recently I worked at a full sevice grocery in Northwest Missouri. If offered beautiful produce and the deli is great and so is the bakery. Also what I was going to suggest to you was to find a store that had delivery. Out store delivers on tuesdays and saturdays. We laugh at some because they will call multiple times a day to add to their list, and some always get the same stuff each week. So I’m happy you found someone to take care of your grocery needs for you. You could also have hubby go to the store with you after he gets home. Good luck…and I love reading your blog!! :o)

  5. Wow, what a wonderful offer! I find my freshest food when there aren’t any organic local farmers markets available or out of season at Whole Foods or Trader Joes. I have one in about 20 minutes driving distance and so that is convenient and I know that I can read labels and see what farmers are organic and sustainable.

  6. I have a grocery list/menu excel file. I choose the meals I want to prepare for the next two weeks and list the ingredients in columns for each area of the store. If I need hamburger, I find the least expensive roast on sale and have the butcher grind 2# of it and chop the remainder into stew meat. I usually save several dollars per pound doing this. Since I live alone, purchasing food to cook a weeks worth of lunches and dinners yields enough meals to last me a month. I use a FoodSaver to save individual serving sizes. When Ever since I have followed this plan I have been able to save several hundred dollars each month! I’m eating healthier and eating out less often.

  7. I am fortunate to live in an area where my groceries are delivered so I use that service quite often. It’s simple to do and I can still use coupons but don’t have to deal with the weekend crowds. Being single, I often cook on Sundays and make enough left overs to get me through the majority of the week and even vacuum seal plates as frozen meals, but without the preservatives. It’s a system that’s been working for me for years!

  8. I always shop with a list. I plan our meals for the week first. That way I make sure to get everything I need. Now that the farmer’s markets are opening back up I love to get as much at the market as possible.

  9. To get the fresh, local milk that we’re addicted to I HAVE to get to the grocery store on Tuesday mornings or it’s all gone. It’s a major motivator to make that list ahead of time and actually get out the door!
