Why This Vanilla Latte Mix Works

After years of developing from-scratch recipes, I focus on what actually matters: bold flavor, easy mixing, and reliable results. The instant coffee gives real depth, the dry milk and French vanilla creamer create creaminess without separation, and a touch of cornstarch prevents clumping so every scoop is perfect. Itโ€™s tested, foolproof, and endlessly customizable.

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Instant Coffee Granules: Instant coffee is the base of the mix and gives it its bold coffee flavor. Choose your favorite brand or use decaf instant coffee if you want to enjoy a latte without the extra caffeine.
  • Nonfat Dry Milk Powder: Dry milk adds creaminess and helps create a smooth, rich latte when mixed with hot water. You can substitute plain powdered coffee creamer for an even richer drink.
  • Confectioners’ Sugar: Confectioners’ sugar (also called powdered sugar) sweetens the mix and dissolves quickly, giving the latte a smooth texture without any graininess.
  • Cornstarch: A small amount of cornstarch helps keep the dry ingredients from clumping together during storage, making the mix easier to scoop and stir.
  • French Vanilla Powdered Coffee Creamer: This is where the sweet vanilla flavor comes from while adding extra creaminess. You can use another flavored powdered coffee creamer, like vanilla caramel or hazelnut, for a fun variation.

Substitutions & Notes: Swap in vanilla caramel or hazelnut creamer for fun twists. For a dairy-free option, use a plant-based powdered creamer and skip or replace the dry milk powder.

Grocery Tip: These are all shelf-stable pantry items. Stock up when theyโ€™re on sale for easy batch-making.

FAQs

Can I make this with decaf coffee?

Yes! Simply swap the instant coffee granules for your favorite decaf instant coffee. The flavor will stay very similar, but without the caffeine.

Can I use milk instead of water?

Absolutely! While hot water makes a delicious latte, using steamed or hot milk creates an even creamier, richer drink. You can also use dairy-free milk like oat, almond, or soy milk.

Can I make this iced?

Yes! Dissolve 3 to 4 tablespoons of the mix in a small amount of hot water first to help everything dissolve. Then pour it over a glass filled with ice and add cold milk or cold water. Stir well before serving.

How much mix do I use for one latte?

Start with 3 tablespoons of mix for a milder latte or 4 tablespoons if you like a stronger coffee flavor. Add 8 to 10 ounces of hot water or steamed milk and stir until smooth.

Ways to Customize Your Vanilla Latte

One of my favorite things about this homemade Vanilla Latte Mix is how easy it is to make each cup your own. Try one (or more!) of these simple ideas:

  • Top with whipped cream for a coffee shop-style treat.
  • Sprinkle with cinnamon or nutmeg for a hint of warmth and spice.
  • Drizzle with caramel sauce for a sweet caramel vanilla latte.
  • Add chocolate syrup for a rich, mocha-inspired vanilla latte.
  • Add a splash of vanilla extract for an even stronger vanilla flavor.
  • Use steamed milk instead of water for an extra creamy, rich latte.
  • Serve it over ice for an easy iced vanilla latte. Dissolve the mix in a little hot water first, then pour it over ice and add cold milk or water.

How to Store Vanilla Latte Mix

Store the Vanilla Latte Mix in an airtight container or glass jar in a cool, dry place, away from heat and moisture. It will stay fresh for up to 6 months when stored properly.

Always use a clean, dry spoon when scooping the mix to help prevent moisture from getting into the container.

If giving the mix as a gift, be sure to include the preparation instructions so the recipient knows how much mix to use for each latte.
