Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Apple Cider: The star of this drink! I love using homemade apple cider for a rich, fresh flavor, but store-bought cider works beautifully, too.
  • Maple Syrup: Adds natural sweetness and depth. You can also swap in honey or agave syrup if you prefer a different flavor profile.
  • Ground Cinnamon: Warming and aromatic, cinnamon brings that cozy fall feel. Pumpkin pie spice or apple pie spice are great alternatives for a slightly different twist.
  • Bourbon: The boozy highlight of the cider. Choose your favorite brand. For a non-alcoholic version, simply skip it, or try rum or brandy for a different fall flavor.
  • Garnishes: Apple slices and cinnamon sticks are classic additions, offering both visual appeal and extra flavor. Pear slices, orange slices, or a star anise can also be fun alternatives.

FAQs

Can I make this drink ahead of time?

Yes! Prepare the cider mixture (without bourbon) and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat gently before adding bourbon.

How do I adjust the sweetness?

Add more or less maple syrup depending on your taste. Honey can also be used as a substitute.

Can I use apple juice instead of apple cider?

Yes, you can! I recommend using apple cider for the best flavor and a richer, spiced taste, but apple juice works in a pinch. If using juice, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to enhance the cozy fall flavors.

Can I freeze this cider?

It’s best enjoyed fresh, as freezing may change the texture and flavor of the cider and spices.

Can I make this without alcohol?

Yes! Simply skip the bourbon and serve the cider as is, or add a splash of vanilla extract for an extra hint of warmth and depth. It’s just as cozy and flavorful without the alcohol.

Serving Ideas

  • Pair with soft baked goods like cinnamon rolls or apple muffins.
  • Serve at a fall gathering for a festive, cozy touch.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, skip the bourbon and add a splash of vanilla extract.

Variations

  1. Non-Alcoholic Version: Skip the bourbon and add a splash of vanilla extract for an extra hint of warmth. Just as cozy and flavorful!
  2. Spiced Twist: Stir in a pinch of nutmeg, cloves, or allspice for a more complex fall flavor.
  3. Citrus Boost: Add a slice of orange or a splash of fresh orange juice for a bright, fruity note.
  4. Boozy Swap: Try rum or brandy instead of bourbon for a slightly different twist on this classic fall drink.
