Usually when I see a stand that I adore I try to imagine a cake that would compliment it. ย And usually I want the cake to be the focal point… not the stand.
Not this cake. ย How could I possible compete with that majestic stand?
So I piped out flowers in the richest chocolate buttercream I could fathom (posting a recipe soon!) and hoped they would hold a candle up to the intricate and flawlessly designed flowers on the cake stand.
The dark chocolate flowers are attempting to mimicย the white orchid design on the cake platter- which is a signature collection of Michael Aram.
Well.
I cannot hold a candle to the stand, and thats ok! ย I dont mind taking a back seat to something so truly pretty.
The beauty of bring a cake baker is that I get to eat the evidence. ย The cake is a rich black velvet cake to contrast the bright white vanilla buttercream frosting. ย I loved the flavor as much as the bold design choice!
This black velvet cake is a simple adaptation of Martha Stewartsย Red Velvet Cake. Soooooooo good!
Just look at those matching side plates! ย Its a food photographers dream.

Now following him on Facebook. I also have an obsession with cake stands that started when I was about 8 years old and my Grandma gave me an antique lead crystal stand that she held on to for safe keeping until I was old enough to take care of it. To this day, I remember the first beautiful cake I served on it. I stared at it for hours, not wanting to cut into it and disturb the beauty that stand and cake held for me. What a cherished memory. Mr. Aram is certainly a master craftsman. How would one ever choose? But I believe my first purchase would also be the black orchid cake stand. It is a work of art!
I think we are kindred spirits Gina. ๐
