Chocolate Mug Cake~ ready in ONE minute!

Chocolate Mug Cake

Have you ever had a craving for chocolate cake but didn’t feel like making a whole cake? Have I got a solution for you! This easy recipe is cheap, FAST, and super delicious!

All you need is three things:

  • Angel Food Cake Mix
  • Chocolate Cake Mix
  • water

I like to make a big batch and store it so I have something yummy for when the craving strikes!

How to Make a Mug Cake

The concept is easy.

One box of angel food cake mix. One box any flavor cake mix. (I prefer chocolate) Combine. Use some immediately then store the rest in your pantry.

When ready to eat:

3 tablespoons cake mix

2 tablespoons water

1 minute in the microwave

And yes it is that easy!

But lets get real about a couple of things.

Does it Taste Good?

Yes. Kinda. 🤣 This cake does not compare to a homemade Perfect Chocolate Cake. Or a Homemade Yellow Cake. Or any from-scratch cake that you make.

What it does, quite beautifully actually, is serve a craving. It’s chocolate. It’s hot. It’s quick.

It’s a small portion so you don’t have to add ‘major guilt trip’ to your list of daily tasks.

I experimented with a LOT of flavors and settled on chocolate cake with mini chocolate chips and massive fun toppings with sprinkles.

These are Mini Rainbow Chocolate Chips which are right up there with sliced bread in terms of inventions that make my life awesome.

Tips for the Perfect Mug Cake

The cake mixture recipe is meant to be fun and easy! Play with it. Have fun. Add whatever you have in the pantry! (I love the idea of a white cake with McCormick® Orange Extract in the summer!)

If you want to double the recipe (if you have a large mug as I did) you can. Simply add an additional 10 seconds in the microwave.

If you are adding a garnish like whipped cream, it will melt if the chocolate cake is hot. (which tastes amazing but doesn’t look as pretty)

  1. What size mug did you use for this recipe? I’m making gifts for my daughter and her roommates as a going back to school gift and wasn’t sure what size to purchase. The ones I got are a 16oz mug . Will this work or will I need to double it ?

  2. The angel food cake mix had two packets that I just combined with some chocolate brownie mix.. I think the one packet was for the egg whites that get folded to make the angel cake. My mix turned out a non airy cake that was like hardened pudding. Should I use different angel cake mix? I tried different times in the microwave.

  3. I got this recipe years ago from “someone” and always have a batch made up, usually sitting on the counter so I don’t forget I have it!

I add a big marshmallow, which just melts into it, a glop of peanut butter, mini marshmallows, chocolate chips, whatever I have on hand.

LOVE that it is so fast and easy!!

    1. Hi, Diane! I work with iambaker and am happy to help with questions. We did not grease the mug. Have a wonderful day!

  4. This recipe is so good!!!! My neighbor made one for me and it was so good! I’ve used multiple different flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and one of my favorites, red velvet. I definitely recommend and it is really good if you want something sweet quickly.

  5. Super easy to follow instructions. I did a variation and use Red Velvet instead of chocolate mix and almond extract instead of vanilla and oh boy was it amazing. Got 3 quart mason jars filled and gifted some to my family with the instructions and they all loved it. Thank you for sharing this great shortcut, extremely helpful when you’re on the road as a Truck driver craving sweets! Definitely sharing & recommending!

  6. Just reading the comments; powdered vanilla is available at some grocery stores and from Amazon. I’ve made this recipe a few times and added that to the dry mix. I used about the equivalent of two tablespoons liquid vanilla in the mix.

  7. I put this mixture together today and made it! It came out perfect and was really good! I liked it so much that I went back to the store and bought the ingredients again only this time I purchased strawberry cake mix instead of chocolate! What a quick, neat treat and it does satisfy the sweet tooth. Thanks for sharing!
