Chocolate Mug Cake
Have you ever had a craving for chocolate cake but didn’t feel like making a whole cake? Have I got a solution for you! This easy recipe is cheap, FAST, and super delicious!
All you need is three things:
- Angel Food Cake Mix
- Chocolate Cake Mix
- water
I like to make a big batch and store it so I have something yummy for when the craving strikes!
How to Make a Mug Cake
The concept is easy.
One box of angel food cake mix. One box any flavor cake mix. (I prefer chocolate) Combine. Use some immediately then store the rest in your pantry.
When ready to eat:
3 tablespoons cake mix
2 tablespoons water
1 minute in the microwave
And yes it is that easy!
But lets get real about a couple of things.
Does it Taste Good?
Yes. Kinda. ๐คฃ This cake does not compare to a homemadeย Perfect Chocolate Cake. Or a Homemade Yellow Cake. Or any from-scratch cake that you make.
What it does, quite beautifully actually, is serve a craving. It’s chocolate. It’s hot. It’s quick.
It’s a small portion so you don’t have to add ‘major guilt trip’ to your list of daily tasks.
I experimented with a LOT of flavors and settled on chocolate cake with mini chocolate chips and massive fun toppings with sprinkles.
These are Mini Rainbow Chocolate Chips which are right up there with sliced bread in terms of inventions that make my life awesome.
Tips for the Perfect Mug Cake
The cake mixture recipe is meant to be fun and easy! Play with it. Have fun. Add whatever you have in the pantry! (I love the idea of a white cake with McCormickยฎ Orange Extract in the summer!)
If you want to double the recipe (if you have a large mug as I did) you can. Simply add an additional 10 seconds in the microwave.
If you are adding a garnish like whipped cream, it will melt if the chocolate cake is hot. (which tastes amazing but doesn’t look as pretty)
This sweet treat is a hug in a mug!

Can you mix the two cake mixes and then separate them into multiple 6 ounce mason jars?
Hi, Well I normally divide the mix into two jars. I see no change other than I put the mix in the jars before dividing the choc chips (if you use them) into each. Otherwise, I seem to get one jar of mostly mix and one jar of too many choc chips!
Tried this before giving out as Christmas gifts. I used one Betty Crocker Angel Food cake mix and one box of Pillsbury Yellow cake mix. Placed them together in a gallon ziploc bag. Did as directed to make cake, and, it Turned out yummy. I am using quart size jars. I measured out 3 tbsp until jar filled. Each jar makes 8 cakes. Have to hide the mix til I’m done filling jars, family keeps dipping into mix to make mug cake…LOL
it doesn’t have to be chocolate, any flavor will work. But the angel food cake can’t be substituted.
Love this mug cake. Where did you get the jars? Please

Iโm wondering if you can use the two step angel door cake mix or does it have to be the one step?
Followed your recipe. Used yellow cake mix. Found it was a little tasteless. I am sure some vanilla extract would have helped but wanted to keep this as simple as possible for gift giving. Added one box of instant vanilla pudding to the mix. It made a big difference. I will keep experimenting.
Made this with triple chocolate cake mix and added a few dark chocolate chips. Just enough and no more .
This idea is genius! My husband doesn’t like cake, and sometimes I get such a craving for cake, but if I bake the whole mix, I either have to eat the whole cake myself, or end up committing the ultimate sacrilege and throwing some of it away once it dries out. I’ve poured over “simple” recipes, but when the late-night craving hits, I don’t want to have to pull out a bunch of ingredients so this was perfect – light, fluffy, tasty and super easy. I used devil’s food cake mix (the angels and devils can fight it out later) and I’ve put peanut butter in the middle, or caramel (or both). Next I want to try a marshmallow, or marshmallow creme, but it’s great as-is.
Love! My daughter and I make them when we watch tv. I used Devil’s Food instead of chocolate. So easy and yummy! Also drizzled caramel over top.
I was wondering if you have printable instructions to glue to the jars for gift giving?
