This Salted Caramel Hot Cocoa Mix is everything cozy in one jar… rich cocoa, sweet caramel, and just the right touch of sea salt to make every sip taste like a treat. Instead of relying on flavored syrups or store-bought packets, this mix uses real crushed caramel candies for a deep, buttery caramel flavor. It’s easy to stir together, lasts for months, and makes a perfect homemade gift for teachers, neighbors, or anyone who loves a warm winter drink! Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: I used regular unsweetened cocoa powder, but you can use Dutch-processed cocoa for a smoother, richer flavor if you like.
  • Confectioners’ sugar: Confectioners’ sugar (also called powdered sugar) keeps the mix nice and smooth. You could use superfine sugar if that is what you have on hand.
  • Powdered Milk: Look for plain, nonfat powdered milk for a smooth, creamy base. You can substitute with non-dairy powdered milk, powdered creamer, or even coconut milk powder for a dairy-free version.
  • Caramel Hard Candies: Werther’s originals give classic caramel flavor, but soft caramels can work, too. If using soft caramels, chop them finely so they melt smoothly in hot liquid. Because they’re softer, the mix may clump slightly; just give it a quick stir before each use.
  • Fine Sea Salt: Balances sweetness; kosher salt or table salt works too, just reduce slightly if using coarser salt.
  • For Serving: Hot water or milk works well with this hot cocoa mix. Milk will make it a bit creamier, if preferred. Top off a mug with whipped cream and some caramel sauce for an indulgent (and deliciously decadent) touch!

FAQs

Can I make this mix ahead of time?

Yes! It stores well in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

Can I use a different caramel candy?

Absolutely. Werther’s originals are classic, but soft caramels can work, too; just chop them finely so they melt smoothly in hot liquid.

How do I crush the caramel candies?

Place the caramel candies in a zip-top bag and gently crush with a rolling pin or meat mallet. You can also pulse them a few times in a food processor. Aim for fine pieces that melt evenly without large chunks.

Is this mix gluten-free?

Yes, all ingredients are naturally gluten-free. Double-check your caramel candies if needed.

Can I use water instead of milk?

Yes, water works, but milk or a milk alternative makes a creamier, richer cocoa.
