Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Eggnog: The star of this beverage (or cocktail, if adding rum) is the eggnog! I have a Blender Eggnog you could use as the base, and make it with or without alcohol. Storebought eggnog would also work.
  • Chocolate Chips: Semi-sweet chocolate chips are stirred into the warm eggnog until they melt. If you want to try other varieties of chocolate, I think dark chocolate would be delicious. Or, for a sweeter, creamier sip, try white chocolate chips.
  • Rum: Spiced rum is optional for this chocolate eggnog. The drink is delicious both ways! If you don’t have rum but still want the alcohol, try bourbon, brandy (which I add to my eggnog recipes), Baileys Irish Cream, or peppermint schnapps.
  • Whipped Cream: For the creamiest whipped topping, make your own! Or, try it with peppermint whipped cream or chocolate stabilized whipped cream (for a truly decadent treat)!
  • Chocolate Shavings: Add some mini chocolate curls on top of each drink for an extra flair of chocolate.

Can I Make Eggnog Without Alcohol?

Yes, you can absolutely make Chocolate Eggnog without alcohol! Simply omit the spiced rum (or any other alcohol) from the recipe. The eggnog will still be rich, creamy, and delicious without the alcohol, making it a perfect option for all ages or those who prefer a non-alcoholic version. You could make a batch for adults who want to enjoy a cocktail and another non-alcoholic batch for guests of all ages.

What Does Chocolate Eggnog Taste Like?

Well, I guess the flavor of chocolate eggnog depends on who you ask. I had about six people try it, and opinions were split—some loved it, while others said it’s ‘not their first choice’ for a chocolate drink. But everyone agreed, it’s definitely chocolatey! If you like eggnog, most would say you’d probably enjoy this chocolate version, too. Personally, I prefer it warm, but it’s great chilled as well. I know this answer might be ‘as clear as chocolate eggnog’ (it’s thick!), so I apologize for that, but I’d love to hear what you all think of it!

How Much Chocolate Eggnog Does This Recipe Make?

This recipe makes 3 cups of chocolate eggnog. Usually, because it is a rich drink, a serving size is 1/2 cup. But, of course, you can fill up those mugs with as much or as little as you crave!

How To Store Chocolate Eggnog

To store chocolate eggnog, keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. (If you notice it starts to smell bad or get lumpy, toss it and make a new batch!) Serve it chilled, straight from the refrigerator. Or, gently heat the eggnog on the stovetop or in the microwave to serve it warm.

Ingredients

  • 1 recipe eggnog, or 3 cups store-bought
  • 1 cup (168 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup (112 g) spiced rum, optional
  • whipped cream, for garnish
  • chocolate shavings, for garnish

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, heat the eggnog over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until it reaches a gentle simmer. Do not let it boil.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat and immediately add the chocolate chips. Whisk continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
  • If using, stir in the rum until well combined.
  • Transfer the mixture to a heatproof bowl or pitcher. Serve immediately for warm chocolate eggnog, or cover and refrigerate for 1 hour until chilled.
  • For serving, pour into serving mugs and garnish with whipped cream and chocolate shavings.
