Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: The base of this hot cocoa mix. Use Dutch-processed for a smoother, richer flavor.
  • Confectionersโ€™ Sugar: Also called powdered sugar, confectioners’ sugar sweetens the mix evenly. You can use superfine sugar if needed, but confectioners’ sugar dissolves most easily.
  • Powdered Milk: Adds creamy richness without needing fresh milk. For a dairy-free version, use powdered coconut milk or oat milk powder.
  • Espresso Powder: Boosts the chocolate flavor. This is optional if you prefer a milder taste, but taste testers loved it (including me!) with espresso powder added.
  • Nutmeg & Cinnamon: Classic eggnog spices. Adjust to taste for a lighter or stronger spice profile.
  • Kosher Salt: Enhances the flavors. Donโ€™t skip it!
  • To Serve: Eggnog, or half eggnog and half whole milk, for a lighter version. Topped with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg, this is the ultimate cozy mug.
