Stuffed French Toast

French toast is a delicious breakfast as-is, but this stuffed French toast is heaven! Itโ€™s Texas toast that has been toasted and filled with a cream cheese mixture and fresh strawberries, dipped in a cinnamon-sugar mixture, and cooked to a golden brown. The French toast is then dusted with confectionerโ€™s sugar and topped with homemade whipped topping.

Stuffed French Toast Ingredients

Cream Cheese: Softened cream cheese allows you to easily mix it with the jam and confectioners’ sugar.

Jam: The cream cheese is mixed with strawberry jam. Strawberry preserves would work as well.

Strawberries: Fresh strawberries are best for this dessert, and I will let you know how to pick out the best strawberries. Be sure to wash and hull the strawberries (remove the leafy green parts of the berries) before slicing them. Instead of simply cutting off the tops straight across, insert a sharp knife at an angle and rotate the strawberry in a circle until the stem pulls out. I would not recommend using frozen strawberries in this recipe.

Bread: I used Texas toast that I toasted before adding the cream cheese mixture and fresh strawberries. Toasting the bread made it more sturdy so it can absorb the egg mixture without getting soggy.  If you donโ€™t want to toast the bread, leave it out overnight for the crust to harden a bit.

Process for Making Strawberry Stuffed French Toast

How to Choose Fresh Strawberries

You can buy strawberries throughout the year, but for the freshest strawberries, it’s best to buy them during peak season. In my case, that time is June. After all, strawberries scream summertime! So, with all the desserts and recipes out there using strawberries, which carton of strawberries should you choose?

First of all, if you can get fresh strawberries from your local farmer’s market, that is the way to go! Look for berries that are bright red, have green leaves, and have a sweet smell. And, size doesn’t matter, although some say that the smaller berries do have more flavor.

Adding Stuffed French Toast to Egg Mixture

How to Make Stuffed French Toast

To get started with the French toast, first, toast the slices of Texas toast and, in a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and cinnamon. Next, in a separate bowl, combine cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar, and strawberry jam. Mix well until you have a creamy mixture.

Then, spread the cream cheese mixture evenly over the eight slices of toasted bread. Top four slices with the fresh strawberries, followed by placing the remaining four slices of toast on top, cream cheese side down.

When ready, heat a large skillet over medium heat and add butter. While the butter is melting, dip the sandwiches in the egg mixture, carefully coating both sides. Add the sandwiches to the hot skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes, or until golden brown. Flip the sandwich over and cook another 3-4 minutes. Serve immediately dusted with confectioners’ sugar and whipped topping.

Variations for Stuffed French Toast

Can you use other fruit? Yes! While my family loves the strawberry cream cheese stuffed french toast, I love blueberry cream cheese stuffed french toast! I love to add a little lemon zest to my cream cheese and then squeeze fresh lemon juice over top before serving. You can certainly experiment with other fruits! See my Rainbow Stuffed French Toast here.

Want to go in a completely different direction? Try bananas and peanut butter in the middle. You can even add Nutella! Top with syrup and powdered sugar and enjoy an EXTRA-rich breakfast. Or how about with a couple of slices of ham and Swiss cheese? The options are endless. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. French Toast is defiantly my go to breakfast if I am in the mood for something sweet. How I have never stuffed it before is beyond me. This is a great recipe and I can’t wait to try it.

  2. I wonder if you could use the Philadelphia Strawberry soft whipped cream cheese along with the strawberrys. Yum !!

  3. #youarebaker Tried it, came out great! My Hubby & 2sons liked them, too! >> my experience: (1)Fresh strawberries get too wet. Try semi-frozen/ rehydrated. I macerated (sugar+ lemon) my strawBerries & drained them for10mins. (2) I donโ€™t like strawberry cream cheese. I put white sugar+cinna+cardamom+orange zest in mine. (3)honeyWheat bread isnโ€™t hearty enough; Italian bread or Halla worked better for me.
