Did you know I bake lots of cakes?  Like, lots and lots of lots of cakes?  I had a homemade white cake recipe that I love but have been on the search for a good (and it must be GOOD) yellow cake recipe. Yellow Cake Mix Recipe

Yellow Cake (Also Called Butter Cake)

There are two reasons that I finally ended up in this yellow cake recipe:

  • It’s a one-bowl recipe.
  • It uses whole eggs, not 8 egg yolks.

Oh, and one more… it’s the BEST! Tastes amazing.

(If you want this recipe written out to try my Birthday Cake recipe, it is the same delicious yellow cake only written to be made immediately.)

Yellow Cake Mix

Homemade Cake Mix

The recipe is written to be stored. You prepare the dry ingredients, label them, and store them in your pantry. When you are ready to bake the yellow cake, you remove it from your pantry and add the wet ingredients.

It is a great option if you have a few extra minutes the week before a birthday or special occasion! Not only can making your own cake mixes save you time, but they taste amazing and are real, natural ingredients!

Chocolate Buttercream

I couldn’t help but pair this yellow cake with rich chocolate buttercream, as that is my favorite combination.

How to Gift Yellow Cake Mix

If you want to give this as a gift simply print out the ‘wet’ ingredients and the directions and attach them to the jar.  Be sure to add some instructions, though.  Something like, “After the cake is cooled call me and I will be right over.” 😉

  1. I just tried the recipe for your yellow cake mix and it came out all wrong. As soon as i started to take it out of the pan it started to fall apart, I can’t even serve it to my own . I am very disappointed in this recipe. Thanks anyway

    1. What went wrong Jenn? I am happy to walk through it with you. Did you follow the recipe exactly? Are all the ingredients fresh? Is your oven calibrated? Did elves replace your sugar with salt during the night? Just kidding about that last one. But I am sure we can find a resolution and get you on the track to baking that perfect yellow cake! 🙂

  2. Just prepared these babies for frosting and I couldn’t help but sneak off a few chunks of cake…. Being caught twice and administering two effective excuses, I now have a delicious bunny cake for Easter! Ugh it’s so delicious! If anyone’s going to be sneaking oieces off, feel free to use the following excuses:
    1. “Why is there a chunk missing?” “Because I’m not perfect! It collapsed….. In the shape of a fork”
2? “Mom, why are you eating cake? Where’s the frosting?” “It’s invisible frosting! Now go do your homework!”

  3. I used this recipe for cupcakes this past weekend and they were DELICIOUS!!! I’m about to make another batch right now!

  4. Yay, so glad I just found this. I LOVE yellow cake and I try to avoid box mixes. I haven’t found a homemade cake mix that works as well, though, so I’m super happy to see this on your site. Can’t wait to try it! P.S. I love your blog 🙂

  5. i made 2 jars of this when I first saw it on your blog. I just made a pineapple upside down cake and 12 cupcakes. It turned out great and I messed up and didn’t read the directions. Just took for granted you put it all in the bowl and beat it like a store cake mix . HAHA!!! I tried a cupcake and it was delish!! Can’t imagine why the others said theirs didn’t rise.

  6. Made this cake for my husbands birthday yesterday and it was delicious!! I was nervous making it after reading some of the reviews … I followed the recipe exactly how it is stated., well except for the vanilla….I used a 9×13 and I only had 1/2 tbsp. of vanilla so I figured it wouldn’t taste right but it did! it tasted awesome!! when I was mixing it in my mixer the cake batter wasn’t runny like how a box cake mix would be so when I was pouring it into my pan I actually had to spoon it out because it was thick so I was nervous about that too. I baked for about30-35 minutes because it didn’t seem done after 25, it did sink a tiny bit in the middle but only I could notice that. I made some chocolate butter cream frosting and it tasted great! nice and moist! not dry at all. definitely try this recipe. my husband loved it and my father and my uncle tried a piece and they said it was soooo good! im def making again! thanks!!!

  7. Hi all this recipe would it be a good cake for under fondant, and also how long would it stay fresh, that is if it won’t be all eaten straight away.
