Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Confectioner’s Sugar: Also called powdered sugar, this sweetens the mix and dissolves instantly in warm milk for a smooth, creamy mug. Superfine sugar could work, too.
  • Peanut Butter Powder: This is what gives the mix its rich peanut butter flavor without adding extra oil. Look for it near the regular peanut butter, in the baking aisle, or sometimes in the health food section. PB2, PBfit, and store brands all work great. If yours looks clumpy, give it a quick sift.
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder: Either natural or Dutch-process cocoa works here. Natural cocoa gives a classic hot cocoa flavor, while Dutch-process cocoa tastes a little deeper and more chocolatey.
  • Powdered Milk: Helps make each mug creamier and richer without needing extra liquid milk. You can find it in the baking aisle or near coffee creamers.
  • Cornstarch: Just a tablespoon helps the cocoa thicken slightly as it heats, creating a richer, more velvety texture and helping prevent clumping.
  • For Serving: Use 1 cup of milk (dairy or oat milk works) and 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter per mug. Stir in 1/2 cup of the peanut butter hot cocoa mix for a smooth, rich, chocolatey drink.

FAQs

Can I use natural peanut butter powder?

Yes, natural versions work well as long as they’re finely ground. If yours is slightly coarse, sift it before mixing.

Can I make this without peanut butter powder?

You can, but you won’t get the same concentrated flavor. Stirring peanut butter into warm milk alone won’t create the same rich cocoa base.

Can I make this dairy-free?

Yes! Use oat milk, almond milk, or soy milk. Just note that the final mug may not be as thick as whole milk.

Can I use water instead of milk for this peanut butter hot cocoa mix?

For the creamiest, richest flavor, it’s best to use milk. The powdered milk and cocoa dissolve into the milk to create a smooth, indulgent drink, and the peanut butter flavor comes through best. If you prefer a lighter version, you can use half milk, half water, but the cocoa will be thinner and less creamy.

Can I make this ahead of time for gifts?

Yes! The dry mix can be made in advance and stored in an airtight jar or container at room temperature for up to 1 month. It’s perfect for gifting; just include instructions for adding milk and peanut butter when serving.

Serving Ideas

  • Top each mug with a swirl of whipped cream and a sprinkle of mini chocolate chips for an extra indulgent treat.
  • Add a few chocolate or peanut butter chips to the warm cocoa for a melty, cozy twist.
  • Pair with a slice of a peanut butter cookie or a chocolate chip cookie for a fun dessert-style drink.

Variations

  1. Chocolate Peanut Butter: Stir in a teaspoon of chocolate syrup per mug for an extra chocolatey kick.
  2. Double Cocoa: Stir in 1 to 2 tablespoons of chocolate morsels per mug for extra richness. Use hot milk (not just hot water) and stir well so the chocolate melts smoothly. For the darkest flavor, you can also add an extra tablespoon of cocoa powder.
  3. Spicy Peanut Butter: Add a pinch of cinnamon or cayenne pepper to the mix for a subtle warming spice.

How To Store Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa Mix

Keep your Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa Mix in an airtight jar or container at room temperature for up to 1 month for the best results. Store it away from heat, moisture, or direct sunlight to prevent clumping and keep the flavor fresh. When ready to serve, simply scoop out the mix and combine with milk and peanut butter for a cozy mug anytime.
