Ingredients & Substitutions
- Dutch-Processed Cocoa Powder: This cocoa powder gives a deep, smooth chocolate flavor that’s rich without being bitter. You can substitute natural unsweetened cocoa powder for a slightly lighter, tangier taste. If you do, consider reducing the sugar slightly to balance the flavor.
- Granulated Sugar: Provides sweetness and balances the cocoa’s richness. Coconut sugar or maple sugar can be used as a subtle alternative, though the flavor will change slightly.
- Kosher Salt: Even a small amount enhances the chocolate flavor and brings out the peppermint notes. Sea salt works just as well if that’s what you have on hand.
- Peppermint Candies: Finely crushed peppermint candies (about 40 starlight peppermint candies) give this mix its signature minty flavor. Candy canes or other hard peppermint candies are great alternatives. Crushing them finely helps them mix evenly and dissolve smoothly in hot milk.
- Whole Milk: Full-fat milk gives the creamiest, richest cup of cocoa. You can substitute almond, oat, or any milk of your choice if you prefer non-dairy.
- Optional Toppings: Whipped cream, mini marshmallows, or extra crushed peppermint candies are perfect for a festive touch when serving.

FAQs
Can I make this mix sugar-free?
Yes! Use a granulated sugar substitute such as erythritol or a stevia blend. Start with slightly less than 1 cup and adjust to taste.
Can I use it with water instead of milk?
Milk provides the creamiest texture, but you can mix it with hot water in a pinch. For richer flavor, add a splash of cream or non-dairy milk.
How do I store homemade hot cocoa mix?
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 3-6 months. Avoid humid areas to prevent clumping.
Can I make it in larger batches for gifts?
Absolutely! Multiply the ingredients, store in mason jars, and include a note with instructions.

How To Store Peppermint Hot Cocoa Mix
Proper storage ensures your hot cocoa mix stays fresh, flavorful, and easy to use whenever you need it.
Room temperature: Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months. Avoid humid areas, as moisture can cause clumping. (If kept very airtight and in a cool, dry place, it can last up to 6 months. Peppermint candies are the limiting factor. Once crushed, they’re more prone to moisture absorption, clumping, and flavor fading over time.)
Refrigerator: Not necessary, but if your kitchen tends to be warm or humid, storing it in the refrigerator can extend freshness to 4-6 months. Keep the container tightly sealed.
Tips for use: Give the mix a quick stir or sift if it has settled or clumped slightly. You can also portion into small jars or gift containers for quick access or gifting.

Autumn
This reminds me of the fancy peppermint hot chocolates from the coffee shops, but way easier and cheaper! I love it!

I am not always about peppermint and chocolate, but this mix is really good, especially if you crave that flavor combination.

Stephanie
The peppermint flavor is just right, not too strong, and the cocoa is rich and chocolatey.

Bella
This is super festive with the peppermint candies in there. I love my cup with all of the toppings!
