Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Marshmallows: I used a 10-ounce bag of mini marshmallows, which is about 6 cups. If you only have regular-sized marshmallows, simply cut them into smaller pieces so they melt more evenly and quickly. Feeling motivated? Make homemade marshmallows to use!
  • Heavy Whipping Cream: Some of the heavy whipping cream (also called heavy cream) is melted with the mini marshmallows to help make the mixture smooth and creamy. The rest of the cream is whipped to make the mousse light and fluffy. Together, they give the mousse its rich and soft texture!
  • Chocolate Chips: I like semi-sweet chocolate chips because they have a balanced sweetness that works perfectly in desserts. They aren’t too sweet, so they mix well with the marshmallows and whipping cream to create a rich, chocolate flavor without being too overpowering. Chocolate chunks or breaking up a chocolate bar into smaller pieces would also work.
  • Strawberries: There is something pretty special about chocolate and strawberries. So, I had to add some freshly diced strawberries to each dessert. Speaking of chocolate and strawberries, have you tried my Chocolate Strawberry Marshmallow Pie, yet? If not, try that next!
  • Shaved Chocolate: For that fancy and elegant look (and, let’s be honest, more chocolate), I added shaved chocolate on top. Chocolate curls would also be really cute!

Can You Use Different Kinds Of Chocolate In Chocolate Marshmallow Mousse?

Yes, you can use a different kind of chocolate! If you prefer milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or even white chocolate, those will work. Keep in mind that the flavor will change: milk chocolate will make the mousse sweeter (which we did test, but preferred semi-sweet), dark chocolate will give it a richer, slightly bitter taste, and white chocolate will add a creamy, sweeter flavor. Just make sure to use the same amount as the semi-sweet chocolate called for in the recipe!

Can You Make Chocolate Marshmallow Mousse Ahead Of Time?

Yes, you can definitely make the mousse ahead of time! In fact, making it a few hours or even the day before you plan to serve it is a great idea. Just refrigerate it until you’re ready to serve. The mousse will firm up and set perfectly in the refrigerator, and the flavors will have time to develop even more, making it even more delicious!

Best Toppings For Chocolate Marshmallow Mousse

Besides strawberries and shaved chocolate, here are a few more delicious toppings you could add to your dessert cup of chocolate mousse:

  1. Whipped cream
  2. Crushed cookies or graham crackers
  3. Chopped nuts (like almonds, pistachios, or hazelnuts)
  4. Caramel Sauce
  5. Other berries like raspberries or blueberries
  6. Marshmallow Fluff

How To Store Chocolate Marshmallow Mousse

To store chocolate marshmallow mousse, cover it tightly with plastic wrap or put it in an airtight container. Keep it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. This will help it stay fresh and keep the mousse cool and creamy!

Can You Freeze Chocolate Marshmallow Mousse?

You can freeze chocolate marshmallow mousse (up to a couple of months), but it might change a little when you thaw it. The mousse could become a bit watery or less fluffy. If you want to freeze it, put it in an airtight container. When you’re ready to eat it, let it thaw in the refrigerator for a few hours before serving.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • To a large microwave-safe bowl, add the mini marshmallows and 1 ¼ cups of heavy cream. Microwave in 1-minute intervals, whisking after each interval, until melted and smooth (about 3-5 minutes total).
  • Add the chocolate chips to the hot marshmallow mixture. Whisk until fully melted and smooth. Let the mixture cool at room temperature for 5 minutes.
  •  In a separate mixing bowl, use an electric hand mixer to beat the remaining 1 ¼ cups of heavy cream until medium-soft peaks form. (Medium-soft peaks hold their shape but have a slight curve at the tip when the beaters are lifted.)
  • Add half of the whipped cream to the cooled chocolate mixture. Whisk until fully combined.
  • Gently fold in the remaining whipped cream until the mixture is light and airy.
  • Divide the mousse evenly among 4 dessert glasses. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or until set.
  • Before serving, garnish with grated chocolate and fresh strawberries.
