Lucky Charms Puppy Chow is a sweet, crunchy, no-bake treat that’s impossible to resist; one handful is never enough! This fun snack (for humans) combines chocolate-coated Rice Chex and Lucky Charms cereal, dusted with confectioners’ sugar, and topped with the iconic marshmallows. Quick to make and perfect for parties, St. Patrick’s Day, or any time you want a colorful, shareable snack that’s fun by the handful. I also have classic Puppy Chow Bars, which are easy to make and perfect for snacking any time!

Ingredients & Substitutions
- Rice Cereal: I use Rice Chex for the crisp texture, but any waffle-shaped cereal works. This cereal is the base that holds all the chocolatey goodness together. You could also use Golden Grahams if you like a slightly sweeter bite.
- Lucky Charms Cereal (marshmallows separated): Use the cereal minus the marshmallows to add extra crunch and festive flavor. The marshmallows are reserved for sprinkling on top at the end. You could swap in another fun, colorful cereal if you prefer.
- Chocolate Chips: I used semi-sweet chocolate chips for this recipe. Milk chocolate works too, but it might be a little too sweet and not as deeply flavored.
- Butter: Unsalted butter helps make the chocolate coating silky and easy to pour. Salted butter is fine if that is what you have on hand.
- Vanilla Coffee Creamer: Adds a smooth, sweet flavor that makes the chocolate coating extra creamy. You can also experiment with other flavored creamers like Irish cream (my favorite), caramel, or hazelnut.
- Vanilla Extract: Just a touch adds warmth and rounds out the flavors.
- Confectioners’ Sugar: Also called powdered sugar, confectioners’ sugar is used to coat the chocolate-covered cereal.

FAQs
Can I make the chocolate flavor stronger?
If you want a bolder chocolate taste, swap semisweet chocolate chips for dark chocolate. The vanilla coffee creamer keeps the coating creamy while still letting the chocolate shine.
Can I use different cereals?
Absolutely! Rice Chex keeps the classic crisp texture, but you can use any waffle-shaped cereal. Lucky Charms adds fun and color, but any colorful cereal works too. Just separate the marshmallows if using them for topping.
How long does this last?
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. For longer storage, refrigerate up to a week; the chocolate may firm up, but the flavor stays delicious.
Can I make Lucky Charms Puppy Chow into bars?
Yes! Press the coated cereal mixture into a lined pan and let it set. You’ll have easy-to-serve puppy chow bars, perfect for lunchboxes, parties, or gift-giving.
Can I try other flavored creamers?
Definitely! Vanilla works beautifully, but you can experiment with caramel, hazelnut, or other coffee creamers. Just add slowly so the chocolate stays smooth and pourable.

How to Store Lucky Charms Puppy Chow
Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. The cereal stays crisp, and the chocolate coating keeps its glossy texture.
Refrigerator: If you want to keep it longer, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. The chocolate may firm up, but the flavor remains delicious.
Freezer: For longer storage, place in a freezer-safe container or zip-top bag and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw at room temperature before serving.
Tip: If you reserved marshmallows for topping, add them just before serving to keep them soft and colorful.

Lucky Charms Puppy Chow
Ingredients
- 2 cups (56 g) Lucky Charms cereal, marshmallows separated and reserved for topping
- 4 cups (108 g) Rice Chex cereal
- ¾ cup (136.5 g) semisweet chocolate chips
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 ½ tablespoons vanilla coffee creamer (or Irish Cream if in season)
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 ½ cups (187 g) confectioners' sugar
Instructions
- Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
- Separate the marshmallows from the Lucky Charms cereal. Set the marshmallows aside for topping.
- In a large bowl, combine the Rice Chex and Lucky Charms cereal (without marshmallows). Gently toss to combine and set aside.
- In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine chocolate chips and butter. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each, until fully melted and smooth.
- Stir in the vanilla coffee creamer and vanilla extract until the mixture is glossy and fully combined. The chocolate should be smooth and pourable, not thin.
- Pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal mixture. Using a silicone spatula, gently fold until all cereal pieces are evenly coated.
- Transfer the coated cereal to a large sealable plastic bag. Add the confectioners’ sugar. Seal the bag and shake until the cereal is completely coated.
- Spread the coated cereal onto the prepared baking sheet. Let it fully cool and allow the chocolate coating to firm up, about 15 to 20 minutes.
- Sprinkle the reserved Lucky Charms marshmallows over the top before serving.
