How to Make French Toast
This easy recipe will be your go-to for perfect French toast! It uses simple ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry.
Topped with organic maple syrup (this is a must in our house) and you have the perfect breakfast!
What Kind of Bread is Used in French Toast?
I find that the easiest option is regular store-bought bread. No muss, no fuss. Just grab a loaf of your favorite white or whole wheat bread and get started! However, there are a few other options that I will use when I am feeling fancy:
- Baguette
- Challah
- Brioche
- 12-Grain
It has been said that the optimum size for French toast is between 3/4 inch and 1 inch thick. I have found that the thicker the bread, the longer it needs to soak and therefore you run the risk of soggy French Toast. A loaf of bread from the grocery store is anywhere from 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch thick and seems to work perfectly for this recipe.
And now, I even have French toast made with bread bowls! Check out my Air Fryer French Toast Bowls and Bananas Foster French Toast Bread Bowls!
How do You Cook French Toast?
We prefer to make ours on a griddle set to 375ยฐF. However, we have also made it in a skillet and found that they have a beautiful dark crust that can add some texture to any French Toast recipe. One trick is to add a pad of butter directly under each piece of bread as you cook it. I also have Air Fryer French Toast Sticks as another delicious way to cook breakfast.
How to Serve French Toast
By far our favorite way to enjoy French toast is with butter and syrup! Occasionally I will sprinkle a little confectioners sugar on top. Other amazing options:
- fresh fruit like blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries (or Rainbow Stuffed French Toast)
- bananas and Nutella
- Stuffed French Toast
- Pumpkin French Toast
We have made french toast many times before, but this version is really, really, really good. ย I have never added vanilla or sugar to the milk mixture before… such a ‘UFF-DA’ moment! (Sorry, I am partย Norwegian.) And so easy!
Seriously… try it! You will not be disappointed. This truly is the BEST French Toast!

I’ve been adding sugar and vanilla for years…adds that extra YUM! Also try a dash of cloves and/or nutmeg ๐ Glad you’re up on your feet again!
Mmyummmy! It sure gives me light on my face! happy sunshine โฅ
I thought that everyone used cinnamon and vanilla in their french toast…guess I was wrong! Now I want some french toast. Maybe we’ll do breakfast for dinner. Thanks for the idea!
Yum! I love French toast. Sadly, my other half does not. This is really close to what I make, although I have never added salt. I’m going to have to try that.
I’m guessing a new camera something????
One addition to try out that will make this even better is bake yourself some homemade Brioche and use that for your bread! You will never have French Toast out again I promise you. I also add a touch of nutmeg to my liquid dredge when making French Toast.
You could bake it, too, about 10 minutes or so on each side at 350. I don’t even use the griddle for french toast anymore. I like having my french toast ready at the same time.
That sounds marvelous! I might have to try it with my sister in law in a couple of weeks. She likes to try new things and is much more up to the challenge than I am.
So are you feeling better? I hope so!
I made french toast this weekend too! I’ve started adding cinnamon, but never thought about the other stuff to add. great ideas from your recipe as well as the other readers!!
I always use vanilla, nutmeg, & cinnamon in my French toast – and I never have to worry abut leftovers! LOL!
Oh if it wasn’t 10:15 at night I would make some. Maybe tomorrow :o)
PS I am so excited about your new little baby. So excited!!!!
I LOVE that Bridal Edition cookbook! I think someone gave it to us when we’d been married, like, 6 years! ๐ Everything in it is good and really straight-forward. I love it!
Now, I’m going to have to try these!
