Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Bread: I love brioche bread for French toast. It is soft and slightly sweet, and it soaks up the custard beautifully! Challah bread, a French baguette, Texas toast, or sourdough bread would all be delicious, too!
  • Eggs: Four room-temperature eggs are the base of the custard for structure and richness.
  • Eggnog: We can’t forget about the eggnog in eggnog French toast! I have a homemade eggnog recipe that would work well (and can be made with or without alcohol). Or, try my blender eggnog. Store-bought would also work. Before using the eggnog in the batter, make sure it has come to room temperature.
  • Spices: Cinnamon and nutmeg are warm spices that give each bite of the french toast those holiday vibes. If you don’t have cinnamon or nutmeg, use pumpkin pie spice.
  • Eggnog Whipped Cream: To tie all of the flavors together, add a dollop of homemade eggnog whipped cream to your piece of French toast!

Best Toppings For Eggnog French Toast

Here are some toppings I would suggest for this eggnog French toast to enhance the flavor:

  1. Maple Syrup–a classic topping for pancakes, waffles, and this French toast!
  2. Eggnog Whipped Cream–to get the full eggnog flavor in each bite.
  3. Confectioners’ Sugar (powdered sugar)
  4. Cinnamon-Sugar Mixture–just a sprinkle gives a burst of flavor and a little crunch.
  5. Caramel Sauce
  6. Toasted pecans, walnuts, or almonds
  7. Chocolate Chips

Storing & Reheating Eggnog French Toast

To store leftover eggnog French toast, first, let it cool completely. Next, place the French toast in an airtight container or wrap it tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. It will keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat it in a toaster, toaster oven, or on a skillet over medium heat for a crispy exterior.

Can I Freeze French Toast?

Yes! If you want to store it for longer, freeze the eggnog French toast. First, lay the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet to freeze, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container once frozen. This will help prevent them from sticking together. Frozen French toast can last up to 1-2 months. Reheat directly from frozen in a toaster or oven at 350ยฐF for about 10-15 minutes, or until heated through and crispy.

Instructions

  • Heat a griddle to 350ยฐF to 375ยฐF, spraying it with nonstick cooking spray if necessary. (You could also use a skillet.)
  • In a large bowl, whisk eggs, eggnog, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  • Dip each slice of bread into the eggnog mixture, making sure to coat each side of the bread (but do not soak it). After coating, hold the slice above the bowl for a few seconds to allow the excess egg mixture to drain.
  • Place on the preheated griddle and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Spray more cooking spray onto the griddle between batches, or as needed.
  • Serve immediately topped with maple syrup and eggnog whipped cream.

What the Test Kitchen had to say about this recipe:

Autumn

This is SO good! The eggnog flavor is not too strong, so I think people will love it even if they don't like eggnog.

Elizabeth

I loved this eggnog French toast! I didn't know what to expect, but it was amazing, especially with the eggnog whipped cream!

Bella

I didn't even need syrup on this eggnog french toast (I though the maple syrup covered up too much of the eggnog flavor). The eggnog whipped cream was the perfect topping.

Annabelle

This was better than I thought it would be. The eggnog is subtle enough that I could see a lot of people liking this.

Selena

This is my new favorite breakfast! The eggnog gives it such a nice flavor, and the cinnamon and nutmeg really add to it. I loved it with the maple syrup and whipped cream. It felt like a treat!
